You have to give John Hughes some credit for what he’s accomplished. At the very least, when he creates a formula picture, he adheres to his own set of rules. Hughes is the poet of the colorful domestic crisis, of the film in which typical Americans do typical things in typical places while learning to be better people than they were at the beginning of the film. Hughes is the poet of the colorful domestic crisis, of the film in which typical Americans do typical things in typical places while learning to be better people than they were at the beginning of the film. Hughes has written, directed, and/or produced so many of these films by this point that we might even forgive him if he starts to sound like a broken record.

Take, for example, the film “Dutch,” which was directed by Peter Faiman and written and co-produced by Hughes. An underprivileged working-class man falls in love with a woman who has a spoiled, obnoxious little rich kid as her offspring in this romantic comedy. It turns out that the woman’s ex-husband was an entitled, obnoxious adult rich kid who had trained the little brat to behave like a monster and speak like William F. Buckley Jr. During the journey, the working-class man offers to fly to Atlanta and drive the little brat up to Chicago for Thanksgiving. This will allow them to become acquainted while on the road. And, of course, they get into all sorts of mischief.

Editor’s Picks

If you’re looking for a formula, this one is a variation on Hughes’ wonderful film “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” in which Steve Martin and John Candy teamed up (against their will) to try to make it from New York to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Other formulas, such as the one immortalized in O. Henry’s “The Ransom of Red Chief,” in which a pint-sized little monster turns out to be more than a match for the adults in his immediate vicinity, are also employed by the monster.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Dutch quiz.

It is Dutch Dooley (Ed O’Neill) and little Doyle who are the main characters in this new incarnation (Ethan Randall). As a result of Dutch’s shoes, haircut, and a variety of other apparently subhuman characteristics, Doyle regards him as a working-class stiff, and Dutch defends the working class in one of several spirited philosophical discussions the two of them have while driving north to Chicago. These exchanges actually read as if they were written by Buckley himself; the precocious little rascal is both intelligent and articulate.

He is also vicious, a karate expert who slams Dutch with a golf club the first time the two of them come into contact with each other. This and their other confrontations, on the other hand, are all proceeding very safely: Because of the parabola of this film, it is inevitable that the final scene will show that angry little face breaking out in warmth after Dutch has finally drummed love and respect into the little girl’s head. For the most part, the less said about these roadside adventures, the better, partly because there are some surprises in store and partly because these characters, like Martin and Candy in “PTA,” ignore all the dictates of common sense in order to stay on the road and avoid getting lost. What would you do if you were in Indiana and your car had been destroyed and your wallet had been stolen, and you were traveling with a young child and there was money in the family? To (1) hitch a ride in sub-zero temperatures on the outside of a truck transporting concrete culverts or (2) call collect and request that someone pick you up or send you cash? The screenplay by Hughes goes to extraordinary lengths to prevent its characters from doing the next logical thing in their lives.

After a while, the performances started to get on my nerves. O’Neill, who portrays the popular working-class hero on television’s “Married… With Children,” is a likable actor with a strong screen presence, but in this role he not only has to act in defiance of common sense, but he also has to hit all of the marks of the formula: hope, trust, betrayal, disappointment, anger, determination, renewal, breakthrough, and so on. O’Neill is a likable actor with a strong screen presence, but

About the quiz

It’s similar to taking a small acting class. As for young Ethan Randall, he appears intelligent and capable, but his character is allowed to be too obnoxious for an extended period of time, to the point where we simply become tired of the little worm. Also, you must try to play this Dutch quiz.
