Christmas movies start to take over the radio every year when we set our clocks back and woodsmoke fills the cold air. The traditional Netflix slate of romantic snow-filled sleigh rides didn’t debut until November, while Hallmark began its bombardment of cinematic holiday sweets as early as October this year. Leading the pack is “Falling for Christmas,” which sees Lindsay Lohan back in a leading role for the first time since Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons” over ten years ago.

A city girl finds love and a simpler existence in the country in the basic yet endearing directorial debut of co-writer Janeen Damian, whose resume includes writing and producing half a dozen holiday films.

In “Overboard,” Lohan plays a hotel heiress named Sierra Belmont who runs into exactly this kind of difficulty. It’s like a tinsel-covered twist. She is there a week before Christmas to inform her father that she doesn’t think the position—”Vice President of Atmosphere”—is the appropriate match for her, despite the fact that she is unsure of what else she should be doing with her life. She just knows that she wishes to have a name other than the one that her father gave her.

Editor’s Picks

Lohan portrays this character like a milder version of Sigourney Weaver’s character in “Working Girl” while dressed in stunning monochromatic ensembles created by Emerson Alvarez, such as the daring red jumpsuit seen on the poster and a fuchsia snowsuit. Although she is pleasant, she does yell instructions like it comes naturally to someone with luxury. This portion of the movie features Lohan at her best, allowing her innate comedic abilities to emerge.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Falling For Christmas quiz.

Sierra runs into Jake (Chord Overstreet), the proprietor of a much smaller, failing resort on the same mountain, when she is on her way to visit Tad (George Young), the shallow social media influencer boyfriend she has been dating for a while. After Sierra’s father Beauregard (Jack Wagner) rejects to invest in his firm, he is handed a cup of hot cocoa, which he is holding when he runs into her. It’s pure camp to hear Lohan repeatedly yell “My Valenyagi” after getting whipped cream on her lapel.

Naturally, this odd couple reunites when Sierra and Tad’s disastrous off-the-grid engagement photo shoot results in their falling down a secluded mountain. Jake discovers the now-amnesic Sierra head-based into a tree while leading visitors on a picturesque sled ride, while Tad finds himself spending four days with a survivor named Ralph (Sean J. Dillingham).

All of this is set in the first ten minutes at a breakneck screwball speed, and Lohan is more than capable of keeping the required rat-a-tat banter. She even does a couple attempts at humor that don’t quite work but offer a delightful wackiness that counteracts some of the more sugary inclinations of the movie. Young is hilarious as Tad, spitting out ridiculous phrases with the utmost earnestness that go well with the wide comedy that his self-obsessed persona demands. The movie could have surpassed its limitations to establish itself as a new classic if it had maintained its hilarious tone the entire time.

The movie pays reference to classic Christmas movies like “Christmas in Connecticut” and “It’s A Wonderful Life” throughout. The romance plot of “Falling for Christmas,” in contrast to those timeless works, is dreadfully dull. Jake, a widower, has expressed the wish to find love from his too ambitious daughter Avy (Olivia Perez). A naughty-looking Santa selling roasted chestnuts makes Sierra—then known as Sarah because of her amnesia—magically emerge in Jake’s life. She aids him in reopening to love as he shows her that there is “something remarkable about basic things.” Start the cloying music.

All of this would be alright if Overstreet’s Jake, a “Glee” alum, had any flair. Lohan is willing and obviously having a great time in the midst of the holly, ivy, and whimsical Christmas charm. Overstreet, however, is stuck being a bland “good” guy with all of his edges carefully smoothed down. His supposedly ongoing sorrow for his wife’s passing is barely visible beyond a fleeting spark in his eyes. Even in a few fleeting minutes as Terry, Sierra’s new assistant, Chase Ramsey and Lohan had a stronger chemistry than her leading male.

About the quiz

Nevertheless, putting Overstreet’s dullness aside, this movie has a warmth that’s difficult to ignore. The television Christmas movie complex often produces films that are more like disposable tissue paper, good for one use only, while true Christmas classics are like antique glass ornaments passed down from generation to generation and placed every year with care on the family tree. On this scale, “Falling For Christmas” falls in the middle. It resembles a re-usable ribbon bow more. It’s not very good. Nothing exceptional about it. But if you have scotch tape or Lohan’s magnetic charm to hold it together, you may save it year after year and put it on gifts.

Additionally, Netflix has been making some of the best of those easily discarded holiday movies. Films like the Scotland-set “A Castle For Christmas” starring Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes, which is briefly shown when Sierra first awakens in Jake’s resort in accordance with the Netflix Christmas Universe rule that states a film from the previous year is featured on a TV in the most recent installment. Both movies benefit from their leading actors’ star power and their filmmakers’ obvious appreciation of Christmas customs and aesthetics.

Fans of Lindsay Lohan or breezy holiday movies will undoubtedly enjoy this picture, but those whose tolerance for this type of treacle is at best minimal should certainly avoid it.
