The updated version of “Tom & Jerry” that premieres in theaters and on HBO Max today is a depressing affair, one that reminds one of similarly hollow uses of beloved properties like “Yogi Bear” and “The Smurfs,” which were also released today. Those, on the other hand, were aware of the importance of focusing on their timeless characters. It seems as though “Tom & Jerry” is unaware of the physical comedy that propelled the cat and mouse to their first-round entries in the animated Hall of Fame, instead focusing on an extravagant celebrity wedding at a posh New York hotel and the people who work there. Some classic Tom and Jerry moments are sprinkled throughout the film, but they are insufficient to make up for the drab plotting and uninteresting characters in this soulless production, which will disappoint both adults who grew up watching Tom and Jerry and their children who have never heard of these characters.

“Tom & Jerry” is a live-action/animated hybrid that takes place in a world where all animals are animated but all humans are real. The show is based on the book of the same name by Tom and Jerry. However, the film focuses primarily on a New Yorker named Kayla (Chloe Grace Moretz), who basically connives her way into a hospitality position at a posh Big Apple hotel the week before a high-profile wedding there between household names Ben (Colin Jost) and Preeta (Chloe Grace Moretz) (Pallavi Sharda). As the preparations for the wedding begin, Kayla discovers that Jerry has taken up residence at the hotel, prompting her to hire Jerry’s mortal enemy Tom to exterminate the infestation before everyone’s attention is drawn to them. Kayla’s boss, Mr. Dubros (Rob Delaney), is supportive of her, but her coworker, Terence (Michael Pea), is eager to bring down the newcomer… for no apparent reason. Ken Jeong plays the role of the hotel’s chef. You’ve been warned, and you should heed the warning.

Editor’s Picks

What is the fatal flaw in “Tom and Jerry”? It’s shockingly unfunny, to say the least. The instances of inventive physical humor are few and far between, and there isn’t a single memorable verbal joke to be found. In order to fully realize the potential of “Tom & Jerry,” the show requires extended sequences of animated creativity, and writer Kevin Costello spends far too much time with the dull humans in this version when fans really just want to see the rivalry between two classic characters. A scene in which Tom attempts to communicate with Jerry by crossing a power line provides a glimpse of what this film could have been if it had trusted its silent characters in the same way that Aardman trusts fans of Shaun the Sheep, for instance.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Tom And Jerry quiz.

While Moretz throws herself into the bad material and attempts to make the best of it, everything around her falls apart. In order to make the humor work, director Tim Story must find the right rhythm and focus, and he appears to be almost purposefully uninterested in his human characters. I understand what you’re saying. They’re uninteresting. After all, why are we devoting so much of our free time to them? Moreover, why are the references so glaringly out of date? There is a lengthy sequence of pigeons who will never be seen again singing A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?” (which is a great song, to be sure, but a strange choice for the year 2021), and a later scene contains references to the films “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Warriors.” I can only assume that this script has been sitting around for decades, and that the people hired to rewrite it in order to bring it into the modern era fell asleep at the wheel while working on it. I don’t hold it against them.

When it comes to ‘harmless animated fun for kids,’ critics often feel like Ebenezer Scrooge, but trust this father of three when I say that even the youngest of children will leave this place and find something more entertaining to do. This market is currently oversaturated, and this is the truth about it. Next week, Paramount+ will release a new Spongebob movie, and Disney+ will premiere “Raya and the Last Dragon” for those who are willing to pay an additional fee to watch. And even on HBO Max, where the vast majority of people will watch this film, there are dozens of titles available, including nearly the entire Studio Ghibli library. It’s just that there are better options than “Tom & Jerry.” Almost anything, to be honest.
