The first few minutes of the film “”The Game” portrays Michael Douglas as a wealthy man who is obsessed with maintaining control over his life. In the movie, it appears to be about how he is brought down to the level of humility and humanity — or perhaps this is just a trick on him. The film is eerily similar to the worst nightmare of any control freak. He is surrounded by a group of employees who are almost paralyzed by the demands that Douglas places on them. The Douglas character is named Nicholas Van Orton. “I have an Elizabeth on line three,” says one secretary, and then a second secretary adds, “Your wife, sir,” as if they were talking about the same person. “‘I understand,’ he says coldly. We have a feeling that if the second secretary had not spoken, he would have responded with something like “”Who is Elizabeth?” His subordinates are caught in a no-win situation. Indeed, it is his ex-wife; at the age of 48, Van Orton lives alone in the vast mansion where his father committed suicide at the same age as Van Orton. His birthday evening consists of eating a cheeseburger that is served on a silver tray while watching the news on CNN.

“The Game,” which is “sort of an experiential Book of the Month Club,” is presented to Van Orton by his younger brother Conrad (Sean Penn), who pays him a visit and tells him about his birthday present: “The Game.” The Game, which is run by a mysterious organization known as Consumer Recreation Services, never explicitly states its rules or objectives, but Van Orton soon finds himself in its clutches, and his previously orderly life has become unmanageable. “As he is guided through the signup process by a functionary (James Rebhorn), he discovers that it will “make your life fun again.” However, he does not see it that way.

Soon after, everything begins to crumble around them. His pen has a leak. His briefcase won’t open for some reason. In a restaurant, a glass of wine is accidentally spilled on him. He’s trapped in an elevator for the time being. The level of chaos continues to rise. He finds himself blackmailed, his bank accounts are emptied, he wanders the streets like a homeless man, he is trapped inside a cab that is sinking in a bay, and he is left for dead in the Mexican countryside.

Of course, many of the physical details of what happens to him are implausible, if not outright impossible, but what does it really matter? The events are believable in the same way that events can be believed in a nightmare: when you’re trapped inside a nightmare, it’s hard to be concerned about how the horror has been staged.

Van Orton reacts to the growing campaign of conspiratorial persecution in his usual manner of cold contempt and detachment, as follows: He thinks he understands all the angles and has anticipated all of the pitfalls, and he believes he can predict all of the permutations. However, he discovers that he was completely wrong. In fact, even those few people in his life whom he believes to be trustworthy (such as a waitress played by Deborah Kara Unger, who I’m not sure is a waitress or not?) may be spies for the government. In fact, there is a possibility that the Game is just an elaborate front for a well-executed conspiracy to steal his millions of dollars. Michael Douglas, who is known for his ability to portray powerful men (remember his Oscar-winning performance as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street”), is reduced to the role of a stumbling, desperate man on the run (remember his unemployed engineer in “Falling Down”).

“Written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, David Fincher’s first film since “Seven,” “The Game” portrays the same sense of events being controlled through invisible manipulation as his previous film, “Seven.” Unlike in the previous episode, this time there is an additional element: Van Orton is being dismantled and rebuilt like the victim of an EST program from outer space. Also unclear to him and us is whether the Game has reached the level of fraud, or whether it has gotten out of hand and is now out of control.

About the quiz

The technical prowess of the film’s crew and the wicked wit of its dialogue add a layer of luster to the thriller elements of the film. Asked by his brother if he hasn’t thought of him in a while, Van Orton replies, “Not since family week at rehab.” And when his ex-wife inquires as to whether he had a good birthday, he responds, “It was great.” “Is there a black dress in Rose Kennedy’s closet?” The film’s dark aesthetic, as well as its preference for shadows, harken back to the classics “”Seven” and also Fincher’s “Alien 3” come to mind. Secrets and details hidden in shadows are revealed on the big screen; on video, they may vanish into the mists of time. in the same way that “Even though we believe we understand the film’s arc (egotist is reduced to greater humility and understanding of himself), it does not progress in a docile, predictable manner; for one thing, there is the real possibility that the Game is not an ego-reduction program, but a death plot; and for another, the plotting is ingenious and intelligent.

Douglas is an excellent choice for the role…. He can play smart, he can play cold, and he can even play angry depending on the situation. Also, he is subtly expressive enough to ensure that the film never reaches an emotional plateau before he does, and that he never overplays the process of his inner transformation. Indeed, one of the most refreshing aspects of the film is that it remains true to its paranoid vision right up until what appears to be the very end—and then beyond it, so that by the time the real ending arrives, it isn’t so much a payoff and release as it is a final macabre twist of the knife in the narrative.
