Every evening, the moss drips, the cicadas swarm, and the sun sets over the river, creating a glimmer of gold. But even while “Where the Crawdads Sing” has a lot of atmosphere, there isn’t much content or suspense.

Maybe it was difficult to adapt the best-selling source material into a movie that would appeal to both diehard fans and casual viewers. Reese Witherspoon chose Delia Owens’ book for her book club, which contributed to its success. Witherspoon is a producer on “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and Taylor Swift penned and sang the film’s theme song, raising anticipation for its release.

Editor’s Picks

However, the movie that results from its cheesy premise is disappointingly lifeless. Following a story by Lucy Alibar, director Olivia Newman cuts back and forth between a young woman’s murder trial and memories of her raucous childhood in 1950s and 1960s North Carolina without any forward motion. (Alibar also authored “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” a book about a cunning young girl surviving in a filthy, marshy environment that “Where the Crawdads Sing” somewhat recalls.)
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Where The Crawdads Sing quiz.

Major disclosures become hurried afterthoughts as a result of the plot being so densely packed that it ends up feeling shallow. “Where the Crawdads Sing” is surprisingly bland and restricted for a movie about a strong woman who has grown up in the wild and lives by her own rules. Additionally, the characters only ever develop past one or two fundamental traits, with Daisy Edgar-Jones’ multifaceted performance serving as its focal point.

A couple of youngsters stumble find a dead body in the muck in the marshes of the fictional Barkley Cove, North Carolina, in October 1969. Chase Andrews, a well-liked big fish in this remote tiny pond, turns out to be who it is. And Kya, who had once been involved romantically with Edgar-Jones, is the main suspect. She’s been maligned for a long time as The Marsh Girl, or, when the locals are feeling really mocking, That Marsh Girl, making her an easy target. Flashbacks show the torture she and her family endured at the hands of her unstable, alcoholic father (Garret Dillahunt, who is horrifying in just a few minutes), as well as the eventual desertion she experienced as each person abandoned her one by one, beginning with her mother. The most emotionally impactful parts of the film are these early, vivid scenes, in which Jojo Regina, playing the eight-year-old Kya, delivers an excellent, difficult performance.

Two very different young men help to influence her formative years when she reaches her teens and early twenties and Edgar-Jones takes charge. She learns to read and write from her too-good-to-be-true childhood pal Tate (Taylor John Smith), who also happens to be her first love. One of many awkward examples of bringing Owens’ words from the text to the screen is Kya’s narration, “There was something about that boy that relaxed the tautness in my chest.” Later on, there comes the haughty and cocky Chase (Harris Dickinson), who is obviously terrible trouble right away but who the hermit Kya is unable to see.

About the quiz

She makes up for her lack of emotional maturity with her interest for the natural world, and as a result, she develops into a great artist and autodidact. Kya’s unfiltered impulses are embodied by Edgar-Jones, who also discreetly conveys her fear and mistrust. Except for the nice Black couple who manage the neighborhood convenience store and act as her impromptu parents (Sterling Macer Jr. and Michael Hyatt, who add much-needed warmth while having very little to say about their characters), just much everyone fails her and undervalues her. In one of the movie’s most important roles as Kya’s lawyer—a sympathetic, Atticus Finch-type who comes out of retirement to represent her—David Strathairn has the least to work with.

This is particularly clear in the movie’s courtroom scenes, which are completely perfunctory and only provide the most clichéd dramatic beats. The pace slows down every time “Where the Crawdads Sing” switches to Kya’s murder trial, which appears to occur randomly and without rhyme or reason. You’ll long to be back in the dappled marshes discovering its numerous species. (Polly Morgan’s beautiful cinematography is included.)

The actual outcome, though, is such a nasty twist—and it all unfolds in such a dizzyingly quick manner—that it’s inadvertently funny. You had the impression that everyone involved tried to compress everything into a manageable amount of time. If you have read the novel, you are aware of Chase Andrews’ fate; if not, I would never dare to reveal it here. However, I will admit that, like you probably will, I had a number of far more exciting conclusions circling about in my head on the drive home.
