Inglourious Basterds, directed by Quentin Tarantino, is a big, bold, audacious war film that will annoy some viewers and surprise others while once again proving that he is the genuine article and a master of quixotic pleasures. He gives World War II a much-needed alternate conclusion, to start (and at this late stage after the premiere in May at Cannes, I don’t think I’m spoiling anything). The basterds finally receive their due. The movie is infused with Tarantino’s passion of movies, from the title, which was lifted from a 1978 B-movie, to the Western-inspired Ennio Morricone opening music to the key location, a theater. The tactile pleasure of 35mm film’s rich, deep hues. A character who is only present at the beginning and conclusion of the story completes the circle. Unmistakably evoking the Dirty Dozen are the “basterds” themselves, savage warriors dropped behind Nazi lines.
Editor’s Picks
The Hero, the Nazi, and the Girl are three enduring figures who have been lovingly and broadly depicted. These three, played by Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, and Melanie Laurent, exhibit Tarantino’s trademark ability to take a character and make it into a Character, definitive, larger than life, and bordering on satire in its intensity but not quite getting there. Let’s say they perceive themselves as larger than the majority of cinematic characters. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Inglourious Basterds quiz. The tale starts in Nazi-occupied France, early in the war, when the cruel, droll Nazi Col. Hans Landa (Waltz) arrives at an isolated dairy farm where he thinks the farmer (Denis Menochet) is hiding Jews. He is correct, and Shosanna (Melanie Laurent) runs away into the forests. Christoph Waltz deserves an Oscar nomination in addition to his Cannes best actor prize for this moment and his overall performance in the film. He constructs a character that is unlike any Nazi I’ve ever seen in a movie, or anyone at all: evil, sardonic, ironic, mannered, and absurd.

Brad Pitt, who plays Lt. Aldo Raine, the commander of the Basterds, is the hero. The star of countless war movies and B movies, “Aldo Ray,” is presumably who Tarantino wants us to hear. Pitt portrays Raine as a crude caricature of a tough-talking Southern boy who demands that every one of his men deliver him 100 Nazi heads. His band, which can appear in formal evening attire on short notice, kills Nazis and miraculously survives in France for years. Pitt speaks Italian with the caliber of a Marx sibling. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Inglourious Basterds quiz. Shosanna, portrayed by Laurent as a curvy siren with red lipstick and, by the movie’s conclusion, a slinky red dress, is known as The Girl. She is captured by Tarantino in close-ups of her shoes, lips, a facial veil, and various body and clothing features, as if she were a fetishist. You can’t tell me he hasn’t seen the noir drawings of the red-clad, cigarette-smoking women by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano.

About the quiz

Frederick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl), a Nazi war hero turned movie star, strikes up a calculated romance with Shosanna, and he convinces Joseph Goebbels to stage the premiere of his new war movie in her theater. This sets up a plot in which Tarantino defies the law to shoot a documentary about the flammability of nitrate film prints. Also, you must try to play this Inglourious Basterds quiz. A Tarantino movie defies classification. No more than “Pulp Fiction” is “Inglourious Basterds” about — what the heck is it about? — fighting? Nothing in the movie is actually feasible, except for the fact that it’s incredibly bloody entertaining. His performers lick the scenery rather than chew it. He is an expert at pushing acts as far as iconographic exaggeration will allow. Even though I was writing a daily blog after seeing “Inglourious Basterds” in Cannes, I resisted providing an immediate review. I was aware that Tarantino had produced a noteworthy movie, but I wanted it to finish and be watched again. I am happy I did. You enjoy it more the second time around, just like many actual movies. QT questioned me about “Pulp Fiction” right after it screened at Cannes. I remarked that the movie was either the finest or the worst of the year. I had no idea how the heck I got here. The finest movie, was the response. The movies of Quentin Tarantino tend to develop on you. One encounter with them is insufficient.
