Being able to recognize real genius while still falling just short of it yourself must be heartbreaking. A man can devote his entire life to becoming a mathematician, but still be powerless to stop a high school dropout janitor from scribbling down the solutions to problems that stump the lecturer. In “Good Will Hunting,” the intelligent, compelling tale of a working-class kid from Boston, the most perplexing issue of all is that genius won’t acknowledge itself. In the movie, Matt Damon plays an MIT janitor who enjoys partying, hanging out in his old neighborhood, and perusing books by downloading entire libraries into his photographic memory. Professor Lambeau, played by Stellan Skarsgard (the husband from “Breaking the Waves”), gives a prize to any student who can answer a challenging problem. The solution is scrawled on a blackboard that is located in the hallway the following morning. Who takes the credit? None of the kids does. A few days later, Lambeau spots Will Hunting (Damon) working at the board and discovers he’s the author—a born math prodigy with the ability to intuitively understand even the trickiest puzzles. Lambeau wishes to assist Will—perhaps by getting him into school or by working with him. But before that can happen, Will and a few of his friends beat up a man while cruising the old area. Will slightly abuses the police as well and is put in prison.Editor’s Picks

The movie’s conclusion and, really, the entire plot, are pretty predictable. The key to its success lies not in the payoff but in the individual events. Despite the fact that “Good Will Hunting” is about a genius who has the ability to change and develop if he so chooses, “Rainman” is a movie about an autistic character who cannot and does not change.About the quiz
It’s true that they both have quick mental arithmetic skills.
