Rich mystery author Harlan Thrombey’s family is there for his Massachusetts mansion’s 85th birthday celebration. The following morning, his housekeeper Fran discovers him dead with his neck cut. The private investigator Benoit Blanc is recruited undercover to look into Harlan’s death even though the police think it to be a suicide. Blanc discovers that Harlan’s ties with his family were strained as a result of threats he made against his son-in-law Richard and daughter-in-law Joni on that particular day, the firing of his son Walt, and a dispute with his grandson Ransom. Harlan’s nurse, Marta Cabrera, apparently overdosed him on morphine after the party without Blanc’s knowledge and was unable to locate the cure, giving him only minutes to live. Before slashing his own neck to protect her, Harlan provided her instructions on how to fabricate an alibi. Marta can’t lie without throwing up, so when questioned, she responds truthfully but incompletely. She consents to aid Blanc’s investigation but withholds information about her conduct. Marta is the only beneficiary when Harlan’s will is read, startling and upsetting his family. While the rest of the family tries to convince or intimidate Marta to relinquish the inheritance, Ransom assists Marta in escaping but tricks her into confessing to him. He offers to aid her in exchange for a portion of the fortune.

A portion of Harlan’s toxicology report and a blackmail note are sent to Marta. When they arrive at the medical examiner’s office in their car with Ransom, it has burned down. Ransom is taken into custody following a brief vehicle chase, and Marta receives an email inviting her to meet the blackmailer. Fran is under the influence when Marta and them meet. She starts CPR while dialing an ambulance. Even though Ransom has already implicated her, she decides to confess to Blanc and state that she killed Harlan, which would make her inheritance unlawful under the slayer rule.
