A big house on Cherry Lane in London is home to the Banks family, which includes Mary Poppins and her friends and family members. Jane and Michael, the children, are out of control and need a new nanny. When it comes to hiring a housekeeper, Jane and Michael have their own ideas while their parents—and in particular Mr. Banks—are adamant on hiring someone strict. “Mary Poppins” is a mysterious young woman who visits at their doorway.
But Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones Mary Poppins has an impact on. When the nanny says, “Anything can happen if you let it,” even the adults can learn a thing or two.
Disney’s 1964 film adaption, starring Julie Andrews in her Academy Award-winning cinematic debut, may have eclipsed the original 1934 children’s book. Her distaste for the Disney version, notably its syrupy depiction of Poppins, was well-documented. Picture Saving Mr. Banks (2013) focuses on the connection between Travers and Disney during the production of 1964’s film.

Ms. Banks is jealous of Mary’s popularity, but everyone else in the home is cheered up by her. Bank’s lessons of discipline and thrift are a great example for the children, and Mary tries to keep him from firing her. There’s only one problem: Michael’s boss wants him to invest his tuppence in a savings account. They all try to withdraw their money in a panic, not understanding what’s going on.
Following a song-and-dance expedition with Bert and his chimney sweep pals, Michael, Jane, and Mary are sent to the bank, where “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” he says, as he leaves the bank.
On his return home the next day, George is a new man, ready to have fun with his children. They go kite flying, and Mrs. Banks joins in as well. They meet the son of the bank’s deceased president, who gives George his job back—along with a promotion to a partner position! Fair enough, Walt Disney and his team of Imagineers were responsible for many of the spectacular effects in this picture, which were innovative for their day. Floating effects, furniture that moves, and toys that dance all look very good nowadays, but some have lost their allure.

But the singing robin, the staircase illusion, and the letter in the fireplace are all clear camera trickery or mechanics. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s still apparent.
Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber, who played Jane and Michale, were not exempt from this stereotype.
At times, their acting was a touch flat for characters in Walt Disney’s production. Their faults are readily overlooked because Mary Poppins and Bert are the main characters.
When compared to today’s updated animation techniques, several of the animated interactions fall a little (and literally) flat.
The scene where Bert dances with the penguins are adorable and hilarious, however, the penguins still look like two-dimensional characters while standing close to Bert. Roger Rabbit isn’t in it. In the sequel, there is an improvement in technique.
It’s no secret that Travers set a number of rules for Mary Poppins, including that there would be no suggestion of romance between Mary Poppins and Bert.
The relationship between Mary Poppins and Bert is immensely adorable and the platonic nature of their friendship feels incredibly forced, despite Disney’s instructions. For further proof, listen to her verse of “Jolly Holiday”
