The first description that comes to mind is definitely not “thrilling,” when you hear the words “Netflix limited mini edy on addiction, obsession, traumas, and chess.” But here we are, and the adaptation by Scott Frank to his work about the coming of age of the same name by Walter Tevis of “The Queen’s Gambit” clearly needs the use of “throat.” Closed by world-class acting and compelling leading performance, this is one of the best series of years and boasts an excellent visual language, a teleplay that is never less than a grip. It is, in short, a victory, while not without faults. And it’s not only gratifying as a dramatic time, an investigation of character, and an eye-catching banquet.
It’s odd that Beth Harmon (the striking Anya Taylor Joy) gets quite a few fists pumps upon discovering the wonderful collection of Frank and co-creator Alan Scott. We see Beth as the 8-year-old when she left the automobile crash that killed her mother unharmed—physically, at least. Her dad is not in the image, thus Beth is at a Christian orphan school.
