Maybe one such instance, where any other version of Friday Night Lights by H. G. Buzz Bissinger is more popular than the book itself. A highly acclaimed movie inspired by a multi-award-winning TV show over five seasons, Friday Night Lights sparked a dramatic literary movement soaking in Middle America in football and incredible realism. The titular premise for this work of non-fiction was created in 1990: a city, a team, and a dream.
The book starts with the history of the city of Odessa in Texas. Bissinger mentioned the city of numerous plagues, including prostitution, rodents, contaminated water, overpopulation. However, despite all this, the 1946 championship win at the Odessa High School led to the eminence of pride and confidence in football in the area until this day. Over 10 years later the high school of Permian opened and rapidly rivaled Odessa with the demography shifting and the high school of Odessa became populated by poorer Hispanic pupils. Ever since it opened, the high school in Permian has won many championships and has made football its followers even more passionate and serious.

The book begins to delve into the characters in the third chapter. The Permanent Coach, under great pressure from city dwellers who accept it, loses a little bit with Gary Gaines. James “Boobie” Miles is the black fullback to the Permian High Football team, an example of how bad the school is by allowing it to get away with anything, especially its poor grades because it is the school ticket to win the championship, but it has no chance of a scholarship that can be used to crush his dreams when he injures his knee while practicing, and is now unavailable. In the 10 years after the 1988 season, and for the Carter High Cowboys, the narrator describes what each boy achieved or lost. Brian Chavez was a lawyer who went to Harvard. Jerrod McDougal went to his dad’s work but never stopped thinking about football from Permian. After graduation, Don Billingsley kept drinking but eventually turned to sobriety and Christianity. The Texas Christian University offered Ivory Christian a scholarship, but this did not match the Permian feeling. Finally, he became a police officer in criminal justice. Boobie Miles tried to play for the Junior College of Ranger, but he too failed.
He never was the same ballplayer after his injuries. The next year, Gary Gaines led the Panthers to a National Championship. Odessa, as revealed in the book 10 years after the season, also adjusted somewhat to the intellectual aim of her school system, rather than merely football. This does not entirely erase the football fervor of the population, but it influences the football program.

The star of the Permian Panthers is the African-American Boobie Miles (Derek Luke). He’s the favorite of everyone, and the squad relies on him to make a difference in close games. But when he injures his knee significantly, the source of adrenaline in the town appears to drown, and all plunge into sadness. The team loses numerous games and appears like coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) has a miracle to do if the team is to have any chance to play the game.
