A young woman expresses her regret for something that happened in the past. The information about the camcorder in the bottom left corner informs the audience that she is speaking to us from the year 1989. “The Photograph,” a romantic drama directed by Stella Meghie, revolves around the question of why she has experienced such heartbreak.
After watching the tape clip, the story shifts back to the present, where Michael (Lakeith Stanfield) meets Isaac (Rob Morgan) in rural Louisiana for an interview about photographer Christina Eames (Chanté Adams), who is being interviewed for a story about her. Even though Isaac claims to have known the artist before she became well-known in New York, the truth is that their relationship was one of those smoldering affairs that almost changed the course of their lives but came to a halt when Christina decided to move to the big city. Michael visits Mae (Issa Rae), Christina’s surviving daughter who is now an assistant curator at the Queens Museum, in order to complete his assignment. Now, he finds himself intrigued by more than just his source’s memories of her mother, and he finds himself joining the long and illustrious tradition of journalists who fall in love with their sources in film. In spite of the fact that their research is beginning to reveal more about Christina’s past life in 1984 Louisiana and the true identity of Mae’s father, Michael and Mae are able to effortlessly establish a rapport and elicit emotional responses from one another.
The Photograph Quiz
There are two sides to the story: the main meet-cute between modern lovers Michael and Mae and the nostalgic flashback between Christina and Isaac, which takes place in the past. The two stories share screen time throughout the film, running parallel to one another until they come full circle at the end. Additionally, by interspersing traits and situations from one point in time to the next, the two stories compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the generations. For example, Mae is often afraid to express how she feels, despite the fact that she has the same desire to pursue it as her mother. Despite the fact that Michael shares Christina’s ambition to advance in his career, the prospect of him landing a new position in London threatens to split the newlyweds once more, this time permanently. It’s a shame that Mae doesn’t share the same enthusiasm, but it would make the otherwise straightforward story more complicated. The script, which was written by Meghie as well, is fairly predictable by genre standards, but it is still interesting to watch as the two stories come together in a satisfying manner. Despite the fact that the movie’s main couple are the stars, it is the B-side love story set in Louisiana that has me hooked. There is no doubt that theirs is the more heartbreaking and high-stakes conundrum. Christina is drawn to New York, but Isaac is determined to remain in Louisiana, and the two are forced to part ways at a fork in the road. Rae and Stanfield have a certain amount of chemistry, but it never seems to quite settle and reach that stage of infatuation that is associated with a honeymoon. Even when paired with Stanfield’s laid-back demeanor, Rae always seems to have a tinge of nervous energy about her about. It’s as if you were in a restaurant and noticed a couple where the guy is more into his date than the woman is into him at that moment. A romantic drama is a perfect fit for Stanfield, who is comfortable in the role. When he notices her, we can see his eyes light up, as if he’s seeing her for the first time in front of him. His body relaxes as he leans in to be even closer to her; the romance, at least on his side of the table, is tangible and tangible. Occasionally, Michael’s brother (Lil Rel Howery) steals almost every scene in which the two of them are present, matching Stanfield’s laid-back demeanor with Howery’s quick wit. “The Photograph,” as seen through the lens of cinematographer Mark Schwartzbard, appears to be a gentle throwback to the romantic comedies that used to leave their audiences in good spirits as they filed out of the theater. In both films, Robert Glasper’s jazzy score brings the storylines to a sultry close, tying together the past and the present in an unforgettable way. Although there are some rough notes in the film, “The Photograph” is an enjoyable enough love story that it’s appropriate to watch on Valentine’s Day, which is dedicated to candy hearts.
