The movies have the ability to transport us to completely different worlds, but this is one of their most rare gifts. More often than not, directors strive for realism, for worlds that are familiar to us. There are numerous pleasures to be found in “Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas,” one of which is the fact that there is not a single recognizable landscape within it. Everything has a strange and haunting appearance. Even Santa Claus would be difficult to identify if he didn’t wear his signature red-and-white outfit.

Using a technique known as stop-action animation, the film tells the story of Halloween’s unsuccessful attempt to annex Christmas to its calendar year.

A traditional animated film is one in which the characters are drawn. They are constructed here and then moved a little bit at a time, frame by frame, to give the impression that they are alive. Instead of the flat world of cel animation, a three-dimensional world can be presented as a result of this technique. And it is a godsend for the animators of “Nightmare,” who appear to have constructed their world from the ground up – every house, every stick and stone – before introducing their skeletal and rather pitiful little characters into it.

Editor’s Picks

The film begins with the announcement that each holiday is represented by a separate town. A bony skeleton named Jack Skellington, for example, is the most prominent citizen of Halloweentown, which appears to have been inspired by Fred Astaire’s moves and fashion sense.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Nightmare Before Christmas quiz.

Jack accidentally walks through the wrong door in Halloweentown one day, and he finds himself right in the middle of Christmas preparations. Surely this is more to his liking, he realizes! Instead of ghosts and goblins and pumpkins, there are jolly little helpers who assist Santa Claus in his annual mission of bringing peace on earth and goodwill to all men, according to legend.

When Jack Skellington returns to Halloweentown, he is consumed by a burning desire to improve himself. To move on to a more important holiday, one that people take more seriously and enjoy more than Halloween, we must first move past Halloween. As a result, he devises a nefarious plan in which Santa is kidnapped and Jack himself takes on the role of the jolly old elf, while his accomplices manufacture gifts. When the presents are finally distributed to the little girls and boys, some of them are so hilariously ill-advised that I will refrain from describing them here so that you can enjoy the show.) This world has been in Tim Burton’s head for about ten years, ever since his mind began to wander while working as a traditional animator on an unremarkable Disney project. Burton, the director of “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and the “Batman” films, has been working on this world in his head for about ten years.

The story revolves around his favorite type of character, a misfit who aspires to be successful but has been endowed by fate with a quirky personality that others find difficult to accept. As the soul brother of Batman, Edward, and the demon in “Beetlejuice,” Jack Skellington is a man for whom normal human emotions are a conundrum. He is also the inspiration for the character of Jack Skellington.

A Tim Burton film, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is so named because its story, its world, and its look were all conceived in Burton’s mind, and Burton oversaw the filming of the entire production. However, it is the film’s director, a seasoned stop-action master named Henry Selick, who is responsible for making it all come together. And he has accomplished a great deal.

His world, created in collaboration with talented artists and designers, is every bit as revolutionary as the worlds we saw for the first time in films such as “Metropolis” (1927), “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” or “Star Wars.” What all of these films have in common is a visual richness that is so overwhelming that it is necessary to watch them more than once. First and foremost, focus on the story. Then go back to the game and just look around in the corners of the screen, taking note of the little visual surprises and inspirations that have been tucked away in every nook and cranny.

About the quiz

The songs by Danny Elfman are also entertaining, with a couple of them featuring lyrics that are so clever they could have been lifted from a Gilbert & Sullivan play. And the choreography, having been freed from the constraints of gravity and reality, has a life of its own, as evidenced by the participation of furniture, architecture, and even the landscape itself.

ADVISORY NOTE TO PARENTS This is the kind of movie that older kids will devour; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that makes them believe that wonderful things are about to happen. The movie is rated PG, perhaps because some of the Halloween creatures might be a little frightening for younger children. As an adult who was not particularly alarmed by Santa’s kidnapping (I had a sneaking suspicion that everything would work out in the end), I found the film to be a feast for the eyes and the imagination.
