“21 Bridges” opens with the funeral of a cop, a uniformed officer who, before he died, took out three of the men who had shot at him before he died. It is the young son of that police officer who is present, and he will grow up to be the police detective André Davis, played by Chadwick Boseman, upon whose shoulders the narrative of this film will be carried. Intense emotion permeates the sermon, and the mourning is profound. In the next shot, director Brian Kirk cuts to an overhead shot of the church’s exterior. This is the type of image you’ve probably seen hundreds of times before, taken from a high altitude by a drone and looking directly down on the scene. However, it is unlike any other drone shot because the cut occurs immediately before the moment when the hundreds of police officers outside the church fire off a perfectly timed salute. It is precisely this kind of thoughtful direction and editing that contributes to “21 Bridges” becoming one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking American political dramas in recent memory. Boseman, who also serves as a co-producer for the film, does a lot of running and driving, as well as gun-pointing and car-hood slamming, but his character also does a lot of thinking—as well as a lot of maneuvering—in this film. In spite of the fact that there isn’t much explicit discussion of race, he is positioned as an African-American cop entering a dangerous territory that has been made even more dangerous by his skin color. “21 Bridges” does an excellent job of making this more implicit rather than explicit once more.
Lawbreakers Taylor Kitsch (who is finding a lucrative niche in character roles) and Stephan James (who is making his directorial debut) are armed-to-the-teeth small-time crooks who break into a restaurant in order to steal 30 kilos of cocaine from its frozen storage area. Only this time it’s closer to 100 kilos, and a near-army of police officers arrives to apprehend them. A massacre occurs, and it is Davis, who has a history of shootings that raises the suspicions of Internal Affairs, who is dispatched to track down the perpetrators.

As the captain of the dead cops, J.K. Simmons is perfectly content with Davis’s ability to apprehend the perpetrators once they are apprehended by Davis. “Flood the island with blue,” says Davis, in reference to his late-night strategy of “closing off Manhattan” (hence the title—this entails shutting down 21 bridges, which is a major inconvenience even in the wee hours of the morning). The script, written by Adam Mervis and Matthew Michael Carnahan, does not attempt to confuse the viewer with a slew of twists and turns. In order to do so, it attempts to keep you invested in Boseman/Davis’ own ratiocinations as well as the moral imperatives he attaches to each new discovery he discovers. In addition to these elements, the film includes standoffs, shootouts, foot chases, car chases, and other action sequences. Which Kirk accomplishes in a concise and economical manner. Moreover, it was completed in less than an hour and forty minutes. It’s a rare achievement these days to tie up an intelligent action thriller with such assurance, and it’s a breath of fresh air to witness it.
