“Beauty and the Beast” managed to get past all of my defenses and enter directly into my most vivid childhood memories, in which animation appeared more real than live-action productions. As I was watching the film, I found myself drawn in by the story in a straightforward and enjoyable way. I wasn’t reviewing a “animated film,” as the term implies. The story of the film, which has been slightly adapted from the original fable, revolves around a beautiful young woman named Belle, who lives in the worlds of her favorite library books and is repulsed by the romantic advances of Gaston, the muscle-bound cretin of her small 18th century French village. In the story of Beauty and the Beast, Belle’s father is a dotty inventor who sets out on an adventure through the forest, but takes a wrong turn and ends up imprisoned in the Beast’s castle. And Belle bravely embarks on a rescue mission to bring him back to safety.
