Unlike Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s Truman Capote, Toby Jones inhabits Truman as if he were born into the role, making him a livelier and more perversely ebullient man than Hoffman’s version. Douglas McGrath (“Emma”), the film’s writer-director, fails to give the character any shape or depth. It’s a shame that “Infamous” never finds its proper tone, which should have been established by the peacock performances of Jones and Stevenson, who are comically flamboyant, self-possessed, and just enough over the top to be dazzling. Sandra Bullock plays Nelle Harper Lee, Capote’s fellow author and investigative collaborator, in a robotic performance. In some scenes, you can almost read the programming code that dictates how she moves her eyes at a critical juncture in the action.
