A best-selling novel by Francine Rivers, “Redeeming Love” is set during the California Gold Rush and is inspired by the Biblical story of Hosea, a prophet who married Gomer, a woman who was unfaithful to him. As Publisher’s Weekly put it about the book, “Writers like Rivers are why people buy Christian fiction,” and, as with the film, this will be a recommendation for some and a warning for others, depending on their perspective. There are a lot of passionate fans of the novel who will want the movie to be exactly what they imagined it to be on the page, and that is exactly what they will get. With exceptionally attractive actors who give heartfelt performances in some beautiful settings, it is a sincere production with a story that fits comfortably and convincingly into a specific spiritual world view. It is unlikely that the film will be as satisfying for those who do not share that point of view or the storytelling traditions of giving oral testimony about horrific challenges that lead to a connection with God.

This book’s title makes it crystal clear that there will be no ambiguity about where it is heading. Initially, there will be sin, and then there will be redemption accomplished through prayer. Nevertheless, as Shakespeare put it, the heroine in this story is “more sinned against than she is sinned against.” Angel (played by the angelically beautiful Abigail Cowen) is the name of the character, and the man who will assist her in finding redemption is Michael Hosea (Tom Lewis). Even though I’ve already mentioned the lack of ambiguity, I’ll make it even more explicit: in the spirit of a movie that really spells everything out, it begins with a group of people panning for gold in the muck, with one of them ecstatically discovering a shining nugget.

Editor’s Picks

An angel is the most highly sought-after prostitute in the town, and she is so highly sought-after that there is a daily lottery for the opportunity to be with her. We first see her looking out of the window, her gaze drooping, as a man behind her places money on the table before walking away. In the words of one of the other young women from the brothel, “You have to believe that there is something more to this world.” Angel claims that she is able to get by because she “never looks back and never looks ahead.” While this is true, there are several flashbacks as she looks back on her life, allowing us to witness the horrific abuse she has endured on several occasions.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Redeeming Love quiz.

Michael is a farmer who is hoping to find a wife through prayer. He is led to Angel by a spirit. He goes to the brothel and pays for her time there, but he doesn’t do anything else with her. She has been traumatized to the point where she is unable to respond to kindness or even simple decency in return. While he does not give up, he does admit that “the next time I pray for a woman to share my life with me, I’m going to be much more specific.” Finally, he is successful in convincing her to marry him. While accompanying him to the farm, she expresses her willingness to “play along until I pay you what I owe you,” according to him. She begins to trust him because he is so gentle and respectful, and she leaves because she is unable to be the woman she believes he should have as a wife. There will be more abuse and more healing before, well, you know what I’m talking about, see the title.

If you are unfamiliar with this specific form of Christian storytelling, the relentlessness of the litany of tragic pain and loss that Angel has suffered may come across as unsettling to those who are not schooled in this specific form of Christian storytelling. This list includes incest, suicide, theft, abortion, child molestation, abandonment, sex trafficking, arson, and much more. Some will find the “Hell House” style fascination with (and amplification of) the sins of the world, as well as the eternal damnation that results as a result, more familiar than those from more fundamentalist traditions. There are narrative beats familiar from most mainstream stories, whether innate or learned, that make “Redeeming Love” uncomfortably unbalanced for audiences who come from other faith traditions or who are secular.

In spite of the heavy-handed dialogue, Cowan and Lewis make a very appealing couple, warm and natural even when the situation calls for it. One cannot help but root for them, and Lewis manages to make Michael’s near-saintly patience and gallantry seem believable. However, the other characters are little more than props, the storyline is wildly melodramatic, and the movie is at best a casual endorsement of lynching (guilty) people accused of crimes and at worst an endorsement of lynching (guilty) people accused of crimes. The most significant issue is that the most heartfelt moments are hammered home so forcefully. “Redeeming Love” could have attempted to reach a broader audience, but instead chooses to preach to the choir.
