Director Chloé Zhao imprints “Eternals” with her distinct aesthetic imprint, but she can only do so much to bend the Marvel Cinematic Universe to her will given the limitations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a result, we have a blockbuster with an unusually delicate beauty that also struggles to meet the gargantuan demands of a massive action spectacle.
Briefly put, it’s a complete disaster. Additionally, and I cannot emphasize this enough, it is 2 hours and 37 minutes in length. Despite this, “Eternals” ultimately feels rushed and unsatisfying due to the large number of talented and diverse characters and the amount of world-building that must take place. As a result of the dense and frequently ridiculous mythology in this film, the film comes to an abrupt halt around the one-hour mark for an extensive information dump. By the end, you may still be perplexed as to what is going on, but you may have lost interest in caring.
But Zhao, the newly minted Academy Award winner for Best Picture and Best Director for the spare and intimate “Nomadland,” does exhibit a significant amount of her signature style. The fact that Zhao manages to find magic hour wherever she goes, from a breezy sunset on the shores of ancient Babylon to ominous storm clouds forming on the plains of present-day South Dakota, will please those of you who were intrigued by her selection and wondered what her version of the MCU might look like will please you. Working with cinematographer Ben Davis, who has previously worked on films such as “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Captain Marvel,” she consistently creates opportunities for us to slow down, take a breath, and appreciate a moment of naturalism and stillness on screen. You can feel the scorching heat of the Australian outback, despite the fact that it is windy. A nighttime action scene set in a forest illuminated by torches is particularly beautiful.

To tell the story of a group of immortal beings who are secretly living on Earth, Zhao and her fellow screenwriters Patrick Burleigh and Ryan Firpo & Kaz Firpo lurch around in time in an ungainly manner. Each character possesses a unique set of abilities, but they all share a sense of levity that has become synonymous with Marvel films. The casting and characteristics on display here are revolutionary, and at first glance, they provide hope that we might be in for something completely different. However, this is not the case. It appears that there is a natural diversity at work in ways that we haven’t seen before, such as the Avengers. In “Eternals,” the inclusion of all people feels both exciting and effortless, from the leadership of Salma Hayek’s Ajak and Gemma Chan’s Sersi to the roles of Brian Tyree Henry and Haaz Sleiman, who play a gay couple with a young son, to Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari, who has hearing impairment and thus has superpowers, to the inclusion of all people in the film. As Thena, Angelina Jolie portrays a fierce warrior who also happens to be suffering from mental illness, which is dealt with sensitively in the film. Lia McHugh, on the other hand, brings life to the proceedings as the androgynous, perpetually young Sprite.

One of the most striking aspects of the film is that two characters have actual sex, which is unprecedented and long overdue in a cinematic world where everyone is super-hot and muscular, and everyone dresses in form-fitting clothes. It is only a few minutes long, but it accomplishes a great deal in terms of implying a deeper and more vulnerable sense of humanity in these comic book characters. Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are most likely the perpetrators. Clint Barton, on the other hand, did because he had children. However, most other romantic relationships have consisted primarily of harmless flirting, so seeing these characters act like mature adults in this manner is yet another example of the potential that exists within “Eternals.”
About the quiz
There is also a plot, but it will vanish from your memory as quickly as it came into your consciousness. In a nutshell, the Eternals have dispersed across the globe in the centuries since they arrived on Earth in a spaceship that resembles a behemoth, black marble Dorito, according to legend. They’ve been working in the shadows, guiding humanity and fighting ravenous, sinewy monsters known as Deviants for the majority of time. The characters are forced to abandon the comfortable lives they’ve built for themselves in order to reassemble (if you’ll excuse the word choice) and use their combined superpowers to avert what amounts to the apocalypse as it approaches. Again! The film does not require you to be well-versed in Marvel lore in general or Jack Kirby’s trippy comic series in particular to follow along; aside from a brief mention of Thanos and why these heroes did not intervene to prevent the events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” this feels more like a standalone film than most of the other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having said that, if you’re a fan, you’ll undoubtedly get more enjoyment out of the film, and the obligatory end-credit sequences will have a greater meaning to you as well.

Sersi, played by Jackie Chan, who possesses transmutational abilities, and Ikaris, played by Richard Madden, who is a versatile, Superman-type figure, are prominently featured as centuries-old, on-and-off-again lovers. Chan, however, has more chemistry with Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman, who plays her mortal boyfriend and shares Sersi’s interest in archaeology. As charismatic as Madden may be, Chan’s chemistry with Harington is stronger. What ever emotional stakes may have existed between any of these characters eventually takes a backseat to the excitement of flying around and zapping monsters with laser eyeballs. You can almost feel the strain of trying to juggle everything. Moreover, the climactic action extravaganza is so glossy and cacophonous that it could have been plucked from any number of soulless sci-fi films from the previous decade, smothering all of the smaller charms we’d enjoyed along the way.
A newly buff Kumail Nanjiani provides some laughs as a pompous Bollywood star, Don Lee maintains a kind presence despite his hulking stature, and Barry Keoghan only has to show up to make us feel his unnerving vibe as a psychopathic serial killer. All of these actors demonstrate that they are up to the task of establishing complex characters within the frenzy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, they—as well as Zhao—can only function as cogs in the machine.
Only on the 5th of November will this film be released in theaters.
