People are eager to return to movie theaters after more than a year of being confined to their homes due to the pandemic. They long to be back in a dark room with a larger-than-life big screen and thunderous sound. Despite the fact that theaters are only beginning to open, studios are eagerly releasing titles in anticipation of what they hope will be a profitable and exciting summer release. Will “Hitman Wife’s Bodyguard” be the one to get things started?
“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” follows triple-A protection agent Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds), who has had his reputation shattered after a painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client. Bryce accepts an offer from Interpol to accompany an international assassin, Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), from Manchester to the Hague. The mismatched pair were forced to put their differences aside, and the results were comedic and action-packed. Kincaid, on the other hand, was willing to go to any length to secure the release of his beloved Sonia (Salma Hayek), even if it meant putting his own life in danger.
As the film opens, Bryce is still depressed about losing his triple-A status, and his therapist (Caroline Goodall, in a hilarious performance) strongly encourages him to put his guns away and take a quiet, restful Italian vacation in Capri. As a bluegrass soundtrack blares in the background, it becomes clear that Michael’s vacation will be cut short when Sonia reappears, guns blazing, and enlists Michael’s assistance in rescuing Darius from the clutches of the demons. In the end, the trio is compelled to assist Interpol agent Bobby (Frank Grillo) in tracking down a device owned by a criminal named Aristotle (Antonio Banderas), who wishes to bring down the entire European economy as retaliation for sanctions imposed on the Greek economy.

“Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is not quite as straight-faced as hit franchises such as those centered on Ethan Hunt or James Bond, but it thrives on making fun of the entire international spy/hitman premise while utilizing the charm of three of Hollywood’s most beloved stars: Hayek, Jackson, and Reynolds. Everyone is exceptionally talented at elevating farce to an entirely new level, one replete with four-letter words that result in a “mouth in need of an exorcism,” combined with immense physicality that makes Hayek look like an Avenger from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and witty dialogue that sounds more improvised than scripted, as in the film.

Reynolds demonstrates yet again why he thrives in satirical action-thriller films, displaying the same command and comedic bravado that has propelled the careers of actors such as Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller to long-standing success. It doesn’t matter what film or genre he’s in, Jackson is an unsung cinematic legend who has perfected the art of cursing to the point where it sounds like a completely different language that has been laced with a little sugar and spice. The real treat, however, is witnessing a real-life reunion between Banderas and Hayek on the big screen. After more than two decades together, their chemistry is still as palpable and exciting as it was in Robert Rodriguez’s groundbreaking film “Desperado.” I could have made the entire film revolve around their infused storyline if I had wanted to.

Hayek’s no-nonsense demeanor in real life is reflected in Sonia, who is depicted as a woman who is no one’s damsel in distress on the big screen. The fact that she can hold her own with the boys, kicking buttocks and claiming names in fight scenes, leaves you wanting more with every viewing experience. The additional twist of having Morgan Freeman play Bryce’s father (who happens to be an award-winning bodyguard in his own right) be dismissive while also exuding a fatherly vibe is also hysterically funny. With the pair being surrounded by nuns, Sonia’s use of the word ‘cucaracha’ to refer to Darius, bullets flying every two seconds, and the Lionel Richie hit “Hello” serving as the theme song for the hitman and his wife, there are a few clever nods back to the original.
