Despite the fact that Witness is billed as a thriller, it is so much more than that. In fact, I wish they hadn’t even used the word “murder” in the advertising for it. First and foremost, this is an enthralling and heartfelt love story that will leave you breathless. The film then becomes a meditation on the choices we make in life as well as the choices that other people make on our behalf. Only after that does it become a thriller – one that Alfred Hitchcock would have been proud to direct and produce.
The first act of the movie establishes the plot, giving the audience plenty of time to interact with and learn about the characters. An Amish settlement in Pennsylvania, where a self-sufficient religious community has proudly maintained the ways of their forefathers, serves as the setting for the film’s opening sequence. It is widely believed that the Amish are deeply suspicious of outsiders and that they are steadfastly committed to their rural lifestyle, which includes horse and carriage, communal barn-raising, gas lanterns rather than electricity, and hooks rather than buttons.
An Amish man passes away. His widow and young son board a train and set off on a journey. A murder takes place in the Philadelphia train station, and the little boy is there to witness it. He plays the tough big city detective who is assigned to the case. Harrison Ford is excellent in the role. He creates lineups in the hopes that the child will be able to identify the murderer. He shows the child mug shots of himself. In the following days, it is revealed that the police department itself is involved in the murder. In an ambush, Ford comes dangerously close to being killed. His life, as well as the lives of the widow and her son, is in imminent danger. He is able to drive them all back to the Amish lands of Pennsylvania before collapsing from the loss of blood he has suffered.

And it is at this point that the film really begins to take shape. As a thriller, “Witness” has been a slick and superior production up until the return to Pennsylvania. Now it transforms into a love story that is both intelligent and perceptive. No, this isn’t one of those romances in which the man and woman fall into each other’s arms simply because their hormones are programmed to do so. The film revolves around the relationship of two independent, complicated people who grow to love each other as a result of their shared danger, their ability to work together, their mutual respect for one another, and their physical attraction for one another, which is so strong that it almost becomes a separate character in the film.
