If you agree to let your children watch “Scoob!” with you, one of the most positive outcomes that could occur is that they will be motivated to learn more about Greek mythology. The importance of finding rays of sunlight wherever you can during these dark and troubled times cannot be overstated.

Apart from that, “Scoob!” is an exhilarating cacophony of retro kitsch and random pop-culture references, which includes one particularly strained (and strange) celebrity cameo. It’s the product of six people who all share screenwriting and/or story-by credits, and it’s a confusing and convoluted origin story for a fairly straightforward Saturday morning cartoon that’s been around in various forms for the past 50 years or so.

A group of teenagers and a talking dog work together to solve mysteries. As a matter of fact, the bad guy behind the scheme is almost always someone they already know, who has been disguised as an innocent bystander. He probably would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those pesky kids. With the knowledge that adults (and probably a lot of younger viewers) are already familiar with these familiar beats and tropes, director Tony Cervone, an animation veteran with tons of experience in the Hanna-Barbera world, has some fun with Easter eggs and meta, self-referential gags. The fact that this world is established with vibrant color and vibrant energy makes it quite appealing right off the bat; it is only when the actual plot begins that things become stale.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Scoob quiz.

When we first meet Shaggy, he is a young boy (voiced by “Young Sheldon” actor Iain Armitage) who is hanging out at Venice Beach, despondent despite the beautiful weather because he has no friends. The way he meets and amusingly names a stray puppy named Scooby Dooby Doo is genuinely sweet and heartwarming, and more of the gentle, emotionally authentic mood of these early scenes would have been welcome throughout the movie. Throughout the episode, we see Shaggy and Scooby bond with the children with whom they will eventually form Mystery Inc., as well as glimpses of the personalities they will all eventually develop: brave Fred, bright Velma, and fearless Daphne, with the nervous Shaggy and sweetly bumbling Great Dane reluctantly bringing up the rear. On Halloween night, they all make a promise to one another to avoid entering dark, creepy houses in the future.)… Yes, that’s correct.)

However, as they mature into young adults and begin to investigate the film’s central mystery, the lightheartedness of the team’s early days gives way to overbearing, nonstop antics. Despite the fact that “Scoob!” takes place in the present day, with all of the technology and conveniences that entails, the teens maintain the franchise’s groovy ethos, right down to their clothing, the occasional exclamation of “jinkies!” and the anachronistic, flower-powered Mystery Machine van Fred rides in. In addition to his role as Scooby-Doo in the previous films, legendary voice actor Frank Welker (the original voice of Fred) reprises his role in this one. Among the star-studded cast of voice actors who are increasingly struggling to make this material interesting are Will Forte (Shaggy), Gina Rodriguez (Velma), Amanda Seyfried (Daphne), and an ideally chosen Zac Efron (Fred).

There isn’t much excitement to be had in the actual adventure they go on with the vapid and vain superhero Blue Falcon (Mark Wahlberg). When Shaggy and Scooby are recruited by this self-righteous good guy to defeat the evil Dick Dastardly (Jason Isaacs), who wants to unlock the underworld and unleash the three-headed hound Cerberus upon the unsuspecting public, they are met with resistance. Scooby-Doo, who is afraid of dogs, is the key to both uncovering the villain’s plot and putting it down. He is also the key to stopping him.

About the quiz

Everything is unnecessarily and excessively busy. I was surprised when my 10-year-old son, who was already a big fan and had even played the old “Scooby-Doo and the Mystery of the Castle” video game with a joystick shaped like the Mystery Machine, turned to me and said, “Honestly?” about halfway through the movie. They were more appealing to me when they were younger.” Then there was the Outkast song “Bombs Over Baghdad” interlude, or the massive detour to introduce a Hanna-Barbera crossover featuring Captain Caveman in a gladiator-style fight. And that wasn’t even the best part of it (voiced by Tracy Morgan).

“Scoob!” is a word that is both meandering and frantically scrambling. It’s both complex and overly simplistic at the same time. As a result, it is able to wiggle out of serious character decisions by employing some of the most astonishingly sloppy writing you have ever seen. It’s enough to make you want to scream “zoinks!” at the computer screen, along with a few other expletives.

Today, May 15, is the first day of VOD availability.
