The film is set in the twenty-first century, when humans coexist with cyborgs, who are hybrids of human and machine, as well as computer and robot parts. As described by the Puppet Master, it is “a living, thinking entity that was created in a sea of information.” Previously, it was in possession of a “real” body, but it was tricked into diving into a cyborg, and its body was murdered as a result. It exists only in the electronic universe for the time being, but it is looking for another body to occupy — or share — with.

“Ghost in the Shell” is not, in any way, a children’s animated film in the traditional sense. It’s another example of anime, Japanese animation aimed at adults (in this case, the same college-age audience that reads Heavy Metal and other slick comic zines). It’s filled with sex, violence, and nudity (although all of it is stylized), and it’s another example of slick comic zines. It’s no secret that anime has been popular in Japan for years, but it is only now making inroads into the international market; this film, which was co-produced with British money, includes a song performed by U2, “One Minute Warning,” which runs nearly five minutes under apocalyptic images.

It is common in traditional science fiction for characters to speak in terms of concepts and abstract information, and this is true in the film as it is in much of traditional science fiction. The following is an example of dialogue: “With the exception of a slight brain enhancement, your body is almost entirely human.” Another question is, “If a cyber could create its own ghost, what would be the point of being human?” Alternatively, “You’re being treated like other humans, so please stop with the angst!”

Maj. Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who runs an intelligence operation, is the film’s central character. She is a shapely woman with a strong personality. She and her team are tasked with investigating an evil foreign operative who seeks political asylum, but the investigation quickly leads them into contact with the Puppet Master, who has been dubbed the “most feared cyber-criminal of all time.” They have the ability to change shapes, become invisible, and dive into the minds of others, which places them not so much in the future as it does in the tradition of Japanese fantasy, where ghosts have always had the ability to do such things.

In the film, there is a lot of melancholy discussion about what it means to be human. According to what we’ve learned, all of the information we accumulate in a lifetime is less than a drop in the ocean of information, and a creature that can collect more information and hold onto it for a longer period of time may be… more than human. Throughout this description of an evolving intelligence, the book of Corinthians is referenced twice: “For now we see through a glass, dimly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then will I know even as I am known.” At the conclusion of the film, Puppet Master invites the major to come face to face with it in the brave new informational sea that it has created.

The film employs the film noir visuals that are common in anime, and it adheres to the peculiar tendency of all adult animation to present us with women who are (a) strong protagonists at the heart of the story, and (b) who are almost continuously nude throughout. According to an article on anime published in the most recent issue of Film Quarterly, being a “salary man” in modern Japan is so exhausting and dehumanizing that many men (who constitute the majority of the animation audience) project both freedom and power onto women and identify with them as fictional characters. That would explain another recent Japanese phenomenon, the craze among (straight) teenage boys to dress like girls, which has gained popularity in recent years.

About the quiz

A breakthrough film, “Ghost in the Shell” is intended to be released theatrically rather than being released on videotape, disc, or in campus film societies as is typically the case.

The ghost of anime can be seen here, attempting to penetrate the outer shell of the mainstream film industry. However, I believe that this particular film is too complex and murky to appeal to a broad audience; it isn’t until the second hour that the story begins to reveal its true meaning, in my opinion. However, I was taken in by the film’s visuals, its evocative soundtrack (which included a suite for percussion and heavy breathing), and its ideas, among other things.
