“Avengers: Endgame” is the culmination of a decade of blockbuster filmmaking, and it is the result of years of hard work by thousands of people on a single production. There are over 20 other movies in the cast, and it is intended to be the most blockbuster of all the blockbusters, a movie with a dozen subplots that come together and familiar faces from over 20 other movies. It’s truly unlike anything else that Hollywood has produced before, existing not only to acknowledge or exploit the fans of this series, but also to reward their love, patience, and unwavering adoration for the entire series. The unvarnished truth is that it’s difficult to imagine any serious Marvel Cinematic Universe fans walking away from this film dissatisfied. It checks all of the boxes, and it even checks off a few that fans might not have expected to see on the list. In terms of sheer spectacle, it’s a satisfying conclusion to a chapter of blockbuster history that will be difficult to top in the future. If you’re looking for pure entertainment value, this is the MCU’s best offering. It elevates its most iconic heroes to legendary status while also providing a few genuine thrills along the way, making it one of the best films in the franchise.

Not to worry, I will refrain from giving anything away. It is the film’s incredibly complex narrative that provides the most enjoyment, and you can go somewhere else if you don’t want that to be spoiled for you. In the disappointing conclusion to “Avengers: Infinity War,” Thanos was finally successful in obtaining all of the six Infinity Stones that he had been searching for, and then used them to wipe out half of existence, including beloved heroes such as Black Panther, Star-Lord, and Spider-Man, among others. “Avengers: Endgame” picks up a few weeks after the events of “The Snap,” as the remaining heroes attempt to pick up the pieces and determine if there is a way to undo Thanos’ devastation of the world.

By virtue of having a smaller and more focused cast than “Infinity War,” “Endgame” is immediately more focused than “Infinity War.” (Many thanks to Thanos.) Despite the fact that its plot contains elements from a dozen other films, it is a more patient and focused film. Unlike “Infinity War,” which felt bloated at times, “Endgame” gives some of the most iconic characters in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a chance to be, well, heroic. Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, and Thor are able to break free from the crowd with the help of Hawkeye and Ant-Man, and they are no longer mere pawns in Thanos’s scheme. As it turns out, the new Avengers are a tighter group of superheroes, and they reminded me of the charms of Joss Whedon’s first “Avengers” film, in which strong personalities were allowed to bounce off one another rather than feeling like they were all strapped into a rollercoaster headed in the same direction. As a result, it allows for some of the best acting work in the franchise, particularly from Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who, as one realizes while watching this, have transformed Captain America and Iron Man into something larger than life for an entire generation. Aspect of “Endgame” that is particularly satisfying is how much of the story arc that the MCU’s two most popular heroes are given, rather than simply drowning them in a sea of cameos by lesser characters from other films. This film becomes an ode to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe due to the manner in which it canonizes them.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Avengers Endgame quiz.

“Endgame” is a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely that, for what is arguably the first time, creates a sense of looking back rather than merely attempting to set the stage for something to come next. This film incorporates elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans are familiar with and enjoy, including character beats, origin stories, and plots from films such as “Iron Man,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Call it cheesy fan service, but one of my biggest complaints about these films, particularly “Infinity War,” has been the feeling that they’re merely advertisements for films that haven’t yet been released. That is not present in “Endgame.” Yes, the MCU will continue, but this film has a sense of closure and depth that has been lacking in the previous films due to the MCU’s history.

Of course, it has to function as a film in its own right. Even though the middle hour of “Avengers: Endgame” is as pure and enjoyable as any other installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are moments when I wish I could sense a human touch beneath the incredibly polished and meticulously planned surface of the film. It was my hope that one of the pregnant pauses about the seriousness of the situation would lead to something that felt spontaneous or an acting decision that didn’t feel like it had been run through a committee during the long build-up first hour. “Endgame” has been teased for years by other films, and every aspect of the film has been fine-tuned by the hundreds of people it takes to make a film of this caliber. Ultimately, the result is a film that frequently feels more like a product than an artistic creation. Despite the fact that Roger Ebert famously declared that “video games can never be art,” he may have been surprised to see art becoming more like a video game, something remarkably programmed and determined, with little that truly challenges the viewer.

People aren’t lining up at the theaters at the crack of dawn to watch “Avengers: Endgame” to challenge them, on the other hand. Ultimately, it’s about rewarding dedication, fandom, and high expectations. Whatever its flaws, “Endgame” accomplishes all of this while also expressing genuine gratitude to the fans who have helped to make this universe a true cultural phenomenon. The stakes are high, and the conclusions have a resonant quality to them. What has transpired is a monumental cultural event, the kind of thing that transcends traditional film criticism to become a shared experience with fans all over the world. The biggest question I had when they first came out was how they were going to top it in ten years. I was right.
