Just because two actors are brilliantly paired together in one film does not imply that their chemistry will be carried over to a subsequent project. When Taika Waititi directed “Thor: Ragnarok,” the relationship between Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth became one of the recent high points of the Marvel movies—Thompson played a world-weary fallen warrior against Hemsworth’s clueless and sometimes emotional Norse god—it became one of the recent highlights of the Marvel movies. Their banter poked fun at each other’s flaws and bruised egos in a lighthearted manner. Many fans had hoped to see these two actors trade witty barbs once more, but the pair’s new film, “Men in Black: International,” strips away almost everything that made them so entertaining, save for their on-screen presence, which is disappointing.
It is no longer necessary to follow agents Jay (Will Smith) and Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) in the latest “Men in Black” sequel, despite the fact that their likenesses are one of the many Easter eggs sprinkled throughout “MIB: International.” An entirely new hero, Agent H (Chris Hemsworth), and his mentor, High T (Liam Neeson), are thrust into the middle of a dangerous mission atop the Eiffel Tower. Inexplicably, the story then shifts back 20 years to Brooklyn, where a young Molly (Mandeiya Flory) witnesses her first sighting of the Men in Black and comes face to face with her first alien. She grows up and becomes obsessed with space, eventually joining the Men in Black (now played by Tessa Thompson). Agent O (Emma Thompson) provides her with a fortunate break, and she embarks on her first mission.
The scene in the ’90s Brooklyn sequence where Molly’s father quotes Morris Day from “Purple Rain” while wearing a Prince shirt provided the most amusement for me. Unfortunately, I still had more than an hour and forty minutes left to go before I had to leave.

The extraordinary at-odds dynamic between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the first two “Men in Black” films was a big part of what made them so entertaining. The only difference between Smith and Jones was that Smith responded enthusiastically to every situation, whereas Jones maintained an unmoving scowl. The script for the new film, written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, squanders this potential conflict by making the characters inherently uninteresting. Despite the fact that Agents H and M (which sounds like a reference to the clothing store) are co-workers, they don’t seem to have much of a connection with one another aside from greeting each other in the morning and on their way out of the building. There are hints of an attraction between Thompson and Hemsworth, but that is a misapplication of what made them so entertaining to watch in the first place. There is nothing like Smith’s charisma to turn around drab dialogue and situations, so audiences are left with two well-known faces and little else to look at in this film.

The script is by far the weakest aspect of the film, as so many plot points are thrown together for the sake of convenience. When an alien motorcycle appears in a scene, certain rules of the franchise are completely disregarded, such as the rule against being seen with alien technology in public. ‘Men in Black: International’ is also the latest movie to cram in a couple of tacked-on pop feminist lines and call it progressive, such as when Agent M questions why the organization’s name does not include the words ‘Women in Black.’ Agent M, however, must inquire as to whether she is being offered to an alien as a sexual companion not long after this scene takes place. If this is Hollywood’s conception of feminism, I really wish they’d put more money into the careers of women writers. It wasn’t necessary for the story to go there, just as it wasn’t necessary to include excessive exposition, other dull side characters, and random country jumping in order to satisfy the desire to see Westerners running through foreign marketplaces.

Despite the fact that director F. Gary Gray prevents the film from completely collapsing, his efforts come across as uninspired. When there is danger or death, events take place and the agents move on, leaving no time for emotions to surface. Even for an action film about extraterrestrials, it’s far too heartless. The quality of computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects ranges from impressive to ridiculously cheap. During the chase sequence, there is a shot of the moon that appears to be stock footage, as well as a CGI shot that appears to be crudely rendered, as if they were trying to save money. The shape-shifting galaxy-patterned villains are formidable and cool-looking adversaries, but they are still untapped in terms of their full potential as adversaries.
Almost everything that is enjoyable about this sequel has been lifted from other films, such as the star pairing from “Thor: Ragnarok,” the villains’ resemblance to the Twins from “The Matrix Reloaded,” and the numerous allusions to the original “Men in Black,” such as the score and the fundamental character arch of a new recruit being taught the ropes by a seasoned veteran. Aside from surface-level jokes, overly cute aliens, and a convoluted story, there isn’t much else to do on this sequel planet without the chemistry of its stars.
