In “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” a competent sequel to the underwhelming horror thriller “Escape Room,” a little bit of trauma can go a long way toward healing the characters. In the film “Escape Room,” a group of teenagers is kidnapped and forced to solve a series of deadly logic puzzles in order to survive. If they are successful, the surviving teens will proceed to the next themed room (which could be a bank lobby, a picturesque beach, or a New York City side street), where they will hopefully make their way to freedom. In “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” two of the players from the previous film must work together to solve a new set of puzzles in the style of an escape room. Due to the presence of this pair of former competitors—Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller), both of whom survived the first “Escape Room,” the emotional stakes of this new film are immediately established, as no one wants to go through the same nightmare twice.

The best part is that Zoey and Ben’s PTSD-like trauma is primarily processed through the escape rooms’ steadily escalating puzzles rather than through their own pouty, leaden dialogue, which is a relief. Survival is everything to Zoey and her teammates, and when they do have enough time to out-think a puzzle, that extra wiggle room usually causes them more trouble than any death-trap could ever hope to cause themselves. When compared to the inhuman and largely implied motives of the Minos Escape Rooms corporation, which is a generically clandestine organization whose members are blessedly never represented beyond a negligible prefatory flashback, the former is a rat in a maze. Using the film’s resourceful adolescent contestants as a contrast against their invisible tormentors, the filmmakers of “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” not only hit the ground running, but they also laid the groundwork for a sequel that’s almost as nefarious as it needs to be.

Editor’s Picks

Zoey and Ben’s motivations are straightforward: she wants to track down and punish whoever is responsible for Minos’ escape rooms, and he wants to repay her for saving his life in the previous film. They travel together to Manhattan, where they are soon trapped inside a booby-trapped Q train car with three other escape room survivors, who are also trapped inside. Thereby a title was given to the tournament, which is thankfully never discussed in detail during the tournament. Consequently, Zoey and Ben form an alliance with a new group of survivors, each of whom is just as nervous as they are. There are some appropriately melodramatic dialogue exchanges and a few hasty judgment calls, such as when alcoholic tough guy Nathan (Thomas Cocquerel) tries to force his way into an escape room (which is designed to look like a bank’s lobby) even though he has no idea what the clues to finding his way out of the room are about to reveal themselves.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Escape Room quiz.

Eventually, Zoey and her friends attempt, but ultimately fail, to stay one step ahead of Minos’s schemes. Unfortunately, the game-players’ foresight does not always translate into success because, more often than not, Minos’ reluctant contestants move or think more slowly than they should be doing. In addition, if you miss a step, don’t stick together, or simply don’t move quickly enough, you could perish in the process. The operative word here is “could,” because the suspense of not knowing what will happen next contributes significantly to the overall tension of the film. “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” also moves at such a breakneck pace from one set piece to the next that it’s easy to forgive its filmmakers for mostly covering and, as a result, over-editing the footage they captured. When you’re wading through a high-concept gauntlet that punishes you if you try to advance too quickly, moving at breakneck speed can be extremely advantageous.

Escape Room Quiz

It appears that the “Escape Room” films, like the “Saw” series before them, were always secretly about the characters, as evidenced by a clunky but effective rug-pull finale in the final installment. While human characters are present in “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” the rest of the game portrays them as manic, disposable game pieces. Sometimes, despite Zoey and her friends’ best efforts, their efforts are not enough, as evidenced by scenes in which a door slams shut or a ladder is pulled away just as someone is about to climb up to it.

In a wise move, little time is wasted in reminding viewers how dangerous the film’s death traps are; after all, that is exactly what the death traps are there for. More often than not, we are witness to characters barreling through rooms with a determination and anxiety-inducing speed that could only be achieved in a sequel, especially given the franchise-oriented mindset that pervades contemporary genre filmmaking nowadays.

About the quiz

When “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions” starts, it moves at a breakneck pace, which contributes to the impression that many of the movie’s traps are impersonal in nature. It is human error—or uncertainty—that serves as the most significant source of tension in this film, and it contributes significantly to making this sequel (a little) more than the sum of its flashy parts. You may not feel the need for another “Escape Room,” but this new one is good enough to make you want to go out and find another one.
