More than a movie, “UglyDolls” is an infomercial for the plush Hasbro toys that are “ugly” in a commercially appealing and lovable way. However, the storyline is not particularly charming or endearing, and the musical numbers are only mediocre. It borrows elements from better films such as “Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc.”, “The LEGO Movie,” “Smallfoot,” “Trolls,” and all those other stories about how we should appreciate our own kinds of beauty and the uniqueness of those around us. It’s not too shabby. Unfortunately, it isn’t very good.
Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) is a cheerful character who looks forward to each morning in the hope that the day will come when her dream of being loved by a child will come true. In Uglyville, where the friendly residents live in an upbeat world stitched together from scraps and cardboard, she is a resident of the town of Ugly.
It is Ox (Blake Shelton) who is the benevolent mayor, and he requests that Lucky (Leehom Wang) attempt to persuade Moxy that Uglyville is the only place she can find so that she can stop dreaming of “a child for every doll” and “a doll for every doll.” The fact that we have seen a factory where imperfect toys are snatched off the conveyer belt so that only those that match the same identical template are given to children tells us that there is another place.

A newcomer bursts through a portal into the town of Uglyville (Emma Roberts as Wedgehead). If someone can arrive, there has to be a place from which they can arrive, and it’s possible that the portal works both ways. Eventually, Moxy and her friends cross over and arrive at “the gauntlet,” where a handsome singing idol named Lou (Nick Jonas) preside over the competition. It is a unique type of perfection boot camp in which the dolls are subjected to a series of rigorous examinations.

The participants introduce themselves, one as a lawyer and model, one as an engineer and model, and so on, all dressed in prep school plaid, and the audience applauds them. When Lou tells the dolls that “if you want someone to love you, you have to look like me…,” the dolls are taken aback. “It’s just that kids don’t want to be ugly.”

Lou pretends to offer assistance to Moxy and her Ugly friends in order to help them survive the gauntlet. He enlists the assistance of one of the “perfect” dolls, Mandy (Janelle Monaé), to act as their guide and transport them to a location he has chosen for them to stay. A shabby shed, which the Uglies immediately fall in love with, is the destination of Mandy’s tour, which takes them past a row of immaculate, identically (and boringly) symmetrical houses. Just to hammer home the point even further, they consider the items in storage to be treasures rather than junk. She begins to appreciate the warmth and optimism of the Uglies, despite the fact that she has been hiding her glasses from Lou in order not to appear less than perfect.

“Perfect” in this context refers to more than just being free of flaws or differences; it also refers to being free of “the three s’s”: stains, smudges, and smells, among other things. It is the washing machine that is responsible for the most severe punishment in Lou’s world for the kinds of wear and tear that result from playing or, really, from any interaction.

As Moxy and her friends become more acquainted with the outside world, Lou dispatches three conventionally beautiful but mean girl dolls to investigate the town of Uglyville. In their spare time, they gossip about Lou and make snide remarks about her. They aren’t particularly bright. It has been discovered that dolls who appear to be “perfect” can be arrogant and self-centered. It is also revealed that the upper-case “U” Ugly story has a lower-case “U” Ugly predecessor.
However, while the film is supposed to be concerned with kindness, its appreciation of individual differences is disappointingly superficial and cookie-cutter in its approach. Even worse, the voice talent is primarily chosen for their singing abilities rather than their ability to create distinct characterizations, and while the songs are well-produced and performed, they are forgettable because they do little to advance the story. Wanda Sykes, who is always a welcome presence, is oddly relegated to a one-note role as an apron-clad, UglyDoll version of Betty Crocker who bemoans the fact that “can’t we all just stay at home?”
“Uglydolls” struggles to keep its message about how we should embrace our imperfections and how our flaws help to define who we are alive, let alone spread it widely. The movie’s conclusion appears to suggest that children can only appreciate dolls who are like them in their flaws, despite the fact that some flaws, such as this script, can and should be corrected.
