A film like “Brian Banks” is being released at an inconvenient time, to say the least.
The true story of the former NFL player who was falsely accused of rape when he was a rising high school star served as the inspiration for the drama directed by Tom Shadyac and starring Ryan Gosling. As a result of poor legal advice, Banks was sentenced to six years in prison and was forced to register as a sex offender, all while fighting a monumental uphill battle to clear his name. Brian Banks” depicts a young black man who is forced into a plea deal by a legal system that prioritizes expediency over truth, with echoes of the horrific treatment the Central Park Five endured in Ava DuVernay’s exceptional miniseries “When They See Us.” The film is directed by Ava DuVernay, who also directed the film “When They See Us.” When he realizes there is no other option, he reluctantly accepts the offer in front of him.
