It’s likely that the documentary “The Biggest Little Farm” will make you happy if you grew up reading storybooks about small family farms stocked with ducks, pigs, lambs, and loyal sheepdogs, and you’ve always wanted to see one for yourself. One of the film’s main characters (who also happens to be the director) decides to leave urban life and go into farming because he or she has spent their entire lives carrying around those kinds of nostalgic images in their heads. The reality of farming, on the other hand, is far less idyllic—a fact foreshadowed by the film’s ominous flash-forward opening, which heralds a natural disaster on a Biblical scale that the farmers will have to survive in some way.

Editor’s Picks

Nonetheless, this is a very likable, if occasionally overly polished and vague, exercise in environmental philosophy and rural nostalgia about a couple of well-off, upper-middle-class professionals (respectively, a documentary filmmaker and a chef and organic food blogger) who decide to chuck it all and return to the land, conquer adversity, and do reasonably well for themselves, all things considered.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Biggest Little Farm quiz.

Apricot Lane Farms, located in Moorpark, California, is a Nuevo-old fashioned farm founded on the belief that biodiversity is the most effective and ethical strategy for raising crops and livestock. Apricot Lane Farms is a Nuevo-old fashioned farm founded on the belief that biodiversity is the most effective and ethical strategy for raising crops and livestock. According to the farm’s website, “regenerative soil methods” are used to improve the flavor of the food, and the entire space is “a micro-ecosystem managed through methods best described as biomimicry, mimicking the biological balance found in our earth’s ecosystem, which allows for a less destructive and healthier farm.” It appears as though certain details about how John and Molly Chester came to be the owners of this farm could have made for an interesting film in and of themselves, albeit one that would have spoiled the fairy tale nature of the origin story presented here.

About the quiz

Their decision to relocate to a farm was allegedly spurred by the misbehavior of a dog they had adopted named Todd, which caused their landlord to kick them out of their apartment. There aren’t many of us who can afford to uproot our lives and relocate on short notice in order to provide a better home for our dogs, let alone to a 240-acre farm that has been envisioned as a self-contained ecological experiment. There are no specifics about how they accomplished this, other than a passing mention of “some investors who saw this old way of farming as the future.” There are also no details about how they obtained the necessary funding, other than the fact that they were successful. A lot of things about this film are too much at times: the adorable animated interludes, Jeff Beal’s Aaron Copland-esque, Americana-infused score, John Chester’s “And then I learned…” narration, and the many lyrical images of the Chesters and their employee backlit by honeyed sunlight are all too much: more selling than telling at times.

But it is only after the Chesters have settled in and realized just how many moving parts there are on even a small farm that the film begins to feel more grounded and transparent. Every day, the farmers are tasked with finding solutions to urgent and everyday problems such as how to prevent snails from infesting their lemon trees, how to prevent coyotes from killing their ducks without having to kill the coyotes themselves, and how to raise an orphaned lamb to adulthood without having to put it down prematurely. The most fascinating aspect of “The Biggest Little Farm” is the story of people who realized they had achieved their dream only to discover that keeping it alive is difficult and often heartbreaking work.
