“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” appears to be an attempt to answer the question, “Can a movie be both hyperactive and boring at the same time?” Genndy Tartakovsky brings back all of the fan favorites from the previous two films and places them all on an overcrowded, doomed cruise ship, but the thin plot feels less engaging than the previous films, and the jokes feel less inspired than they were in the previous films. Tartakovsky’s character design keeps things visually interesting for a while, but most people over the age of 12 will become disinterested in the plot by the middle of the film and begin wishing for their own cinematic vacation to substitute.

Mr. Dracula himself is played by Adam Sandler, who also serves as the proprietor of the Hotel Transylvania, a haven for monstrous creatures in a world where they coexist more peacefully with humans. Dracula’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) married a human named Johnny in the film Dracula’s Daughter (Andy Samberg). The first film was about their Romeo and Juliet wedding, and the second was about them having a child, and dad being concerned about whether the child would be human or a vampire. In the third film, we have another Sandler classic: a vacation for the whole family!
Drac’s daughter, Mavis, senses that her father needs a break, so she arranges for him and his friends to go on a monster cruise, which includes characters such as Frankenstein (Kevin James), Wayne the Werewolf (Steve Buscemi), Murray the Mummy (Kegan-Michelle Key), Griffin the Invisible Man (David Spade), and even Vlad the Impaler (Kegan-Michelle Key) (Mel Brooks). No one realizes that the cruise is actually a trap set by the infamous Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) and his daughter Ericka (Kathryn Hahn), but things become even more complicated when Dracula falls in love with the human who is secretly attempting to destroy him in the first place.

When it comes to pure visuals and character design, the setting for “Hotel Transylvania 3” allows for the most Tartakovsky ingenuity of the entire series to be showcased. When dozens of monsters are seen in dance crowds or by the ship’s pool, one gets the impression that the creators of “Samurai Jack” and “Dexter’s Laboratory” are simply enjoying the opportunity to stuff as much monster ingenuity as they can into the film. Even when they are in the spotlight, the main characters in this series are far more visually appealing than the majority of dull children’s movies. It’s been the best part of the series for a very long time.

The fact that it is almost the only thing about “Summer Vacation” is remarkable. However, the story of Dracula’s “Zing” moment when he first sees Ericka (which is what happens when a monster falls in love at first sight) is incredibly boring, in no small part because it gives Sandler far too much goofy voice time, and it takes up nearly the entire plot of this film. Frank gambles, Wayne and his wife enjoy the cruise day care, Murray… no, wait, they forgot to give Murray something to do—but the movie is constantly revolving around the Drac/Ericka story, and it’s just not entertaining for either kids or adults, so don’t bother watching it. At every point where it appears as though the film has a chance to do something interesting, such as when they arrive at the lost city of Atlantis—which should have been an opportunity for Tartakovsky’s visual sense to take over, but instead is just a lame Vegas riff—the film returns to its plot. I had no idea that the word “zing” could be so irritating until recently.

Trust me, I understand that “storytelling” is not the primary reason that children attend third installments of a franchise—I have two children of my own who are fans of this particular series—but I’m speaking more to the adults who have to pay for the ticket and waste their time in this establishment. Children seek out familiar faces, repeated jokes, and a familiar world that they believe they are familiar with. This is enough for “Hotel Transylvania 3” to distinguish itself from the truly abysmal summer animated offerings of recent years (I’m looking at you, “The Nut Job 2” and “The Emoji Movie”). It isn’t all that bad. It’s more forgettable than painful, in my experience. When it was over, I asked my 9-year-old what he would do with the money he had earned. “I would have given it four stars, but I’m a kid,” he said. If I were an adult, I’d probably give it a rating of three.” No, not at all.
