It’s unusual to describe a Jerry Bruckheimer production as “understated,” but that’s exactly what “12 Strong” ends up being, which is a pleasant surprise.

Not to say that it is completely restrained, because it is anything but. This rousing war film tells the story of real-life heroism against insurmountable odds, and it is intended to elicit equal amounts of excitement and patriotism from the audience. “12 Strong,” which takes place shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is jam-packed with lengthy battle sequences that are filled with deafening bombings and seemingly endless amounts of gunfire. As a result of the cumulative effect, you’ll walk out of the theater with a sense that you, too, have been called to battle – as well as a newfound respect for those who are courageous enough to do so for their country.

In contrast, Danish commercial director Nicolai Fuglsig, who is making his feature film directorial debut, draws on his previous experience as a photojournalist to inject a sense of gritty realism into the action, rather than sweeping sentimentality, into the story. It is also important to note that the vibrant sound design, as well as a score that steadily increases the tension, contribute to our immersion.

From a technical standpoint, everything is in order. The film’s narrative momentum is one area where it could have used a little more punch. It is based on the screenplay written by Ted Tally (“The Silence of the Lambs”) and Peter Craig (“The Town”), which was itself inspired by Doug Stanton’s book “The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan.” However, the film eventually becomes too long and repetitive, especially in the second half. The impressive lineup of actors who make up the ensemble cast, on the other hand, can only do so much with their thinly developed characters.

They are all led by Chris Hemsworth, who portrays Capt. Mitch Nelson, the commander of a dozen Green Berets who were the first American troops to set foot in Afghanistan following the September 11th attacks. Among his men are Hal Spencer (Michael Shannon), an older and more experienced chief warrant officer; the wisecracking Sam Diller (Michael Pena); and weapons expert Ben Milo (Trevante Rhodes, who appeared in the film Moonlight). Col. Mulholland (William Fichtner) and Lieutenant Colonel Bowers (William H. Macy) are the ones who give them orders, and they’re not amused (comedian Rob Riggle, a Marine Corps veteran himself in a rare dramatic role).

In order to enter northern Afghanistan, they must first cross the border into Uzbekistan with the assistance of Uzbek warlord General Dostum (Navid Negahban), who has his own reasons for fighting the Taliban. Nelson and his team are tasked with capturing the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which is a Taliban stronghold, in collaboration with Dostum and his men. However, despite their extensive training and boundless bravery, the American troops are completely unaware that they will be forced to navigate this treacherous terrain, which has been notoriously responsible for the destruction of empires for centuries, on horseback. Furthermore, they must complete it before the winter freeze arrives in three weeks.

About the quiz

A fantastic story, but it’s also a ridiculous sight to behold: hulking soldiers, rigged with high-tech equipment and weaponry, galloping along on horses, taking on tanks and rocket launchers of enormous proportions. Throughout the film, Fuglsig depicts these confrontations in a relentless and unflinching manner. Though meticulous, he makes room for a swagger here and there, especially when it comes to Hemsworth’s character.

Everyone underestimates Nelson, which isn’t what you’d expect from a character played by the hunky Hemsworth, but it’s one of the more compelling dynamics in the film. He’s too pretty and too young to be in this place. He has insufficient field experience and is constantly under pressure to prove himself. This is especially true in the ever-evolving relationship between Nelson and the mystically wise Dostum, which is explored in detail in the novel. Negahban is a formidable opponent, but he also brings a much-needed sense of calm to the otherwise tense proceedings.

It goes without saying that Hemsworth is up to the physical demands of the role (he is Thor, after all), but he never receives enough credit for his acting abilities, which include dramatic and comedic performances. He also has a good friend-like relationship with Shannon and Pena. However, with the exception of a sweet subplot involving Rhodes’ character, the rest of the team is barely mentioned. They are concepts; they are cogs in the machine.

A similar sentiment can be found throughout “12 Strong,” which does not appear to be particularly interested in delving any further into the larger implications of the United States’ prolonged involvement in Afghanistan. That, however, is not its purpose, and it is also not the reason you are here. You’ve come to feel good about some great men, if only for a brief moment, and you’re here to do so.
