According to the official synopsis, “Pitch Perfect 3” is the third and final installment in the wildly successful series about the musical misadventures of the Barden Bellas. After the final a cappella song, there are a lot of overlong, tearful group hugs, which clearly demonstrate this.
But we didn’t really need a second “Pitch Perfect” movie, let alone a third one, after the first. It was a burst of energy and a breath of fresh air in 2012, and it was only the beginning. In addition to being snarky but sweet, it also featured an inclusive and likable cast that gave us a vivid glimpse into a specific niche of the college experience. It made a lot of money while having a good time making fun of its geeky surroundings. It’s also the reason you’ll hear the insanely catchy Anna Kendrick song “Cups” everywhere you go, from the pet food store to the dentist’s office, and everywhere you go.
Because of this, we got “Pitch Perfect 2” in 2015, which was nearly identical to the first film in terms of tone and beats, despite the fact that Elizabeth Banks was making her feature-film debut as director. It generated even more revenue.

As a result, we now have “Pitch Perfect 3.” One of the best things I can say about it is that it is not yet another rehash of what came before it. Instead, Kay Cannon (who has written the screenplays for all three films) has completely turned the situation upside down. The overproduced pop tunes serve as a unifying thread, of course; they’re the only real source of cohesion, and they’re also the reason you’ve come to see her in person. However, it appears as if she and director Trish Sie (“Step Up All In”) have decided to go completely insane with this final outing, turning it into a globe-trotting action film in the vein of James Bond. Although this does not necessarily imply an improvement, it is at the very least an ambitious departure from the status quo.
“Pitch Perfect 3” opens with the Bellas performing their signature dance-and-harmony routine on a mega-yacht to Britney Spears’ “Toxic” (which I’m sure I’ll be able to erase from my memory any day now). A fire extinguisher is brought in by Fat Amy, played by Rebel Wilson, and the ladies all jump into the water just as the boat explodes in front of them, thanks to Beca Kendrick’s leadership.

The film then flashes back three weeks to bring us up to speed with the events of the previous three weeks. Everything, with the exception of Emily, played by Hailee Steinfeld, has graduated from college and is struggling to find their voice (see what I did there?) in the real world, according to the Bellas. Beca has recently resigned from her position as a music producer. Amy, her roommate, is a workaholic who never really has a job. Furthermore, the ever-eager Chloe (Brittany Snow, as enthusiastic as ever) has her sights set on attending veterinary school. Unlike the rest of the ladies, who each get a line or two to update their status, the rest of the ladies are largely ignored.
An invitation to join a USO tour and perform in Spain, Italy, and France provides the perfect contrivance to bring the Bellas back together for one final time and allow them to avoid the responsibilities of adulthood for another year.

And that’s pretty much it in terms of the storyline’s flimsiness, which connects one song to another. Even though the numbers are lively as always, the sameness of the energy and choreography eventually makes them feel repetitive and numbing.

Several of the absurd throwaway lines are amusing, and Kendrick is a master of the deadpan aside as he has proven time and time again. And Wilson has such a wild energy, and she embraces the inappropriate with such glee, that she almost seems to be able to will you into submission. You can’t help but admire her, while also wishing she had more challenging material to work with. And, as is customary for her comedic work, the film relies heavily on physical comedy while also incorporating a layer of butt-kicking badassery that, for some reason, makes sense. However, John Lithgow’s performance as Amy’s shady, estranged father, delivered in an intentionally over-the-top Australian accent, is a misfire and a waste of his considerable talents.
Accordingly, “Pitch Perfect 3” is severely overstuffed with new characters who never quite make an impression, including not one but two blandly handsome potential love interests who never quite make an impression (Matt Lanter and Guy Burnet). With any luck, the Bellas will be competing on the USO tour, this time against a generic pop-country group, a hip-hop duo, and an all-female rock band called Evermoist (whose name they keep saying over and over again, despite the fact that it isn’t all that funny the first time). This results in the obligatory cross-genre riff-off, which has become a staple of all of these films and feels more forced than ever.
And it wouldn’t be a “Pitch Perfect” movie without Banks and John Michael Higgins returning to reprise their roles as the commentator duo who serve as our passive-aggressive Greek chorus in this installment. This time, they interject themselves into the action as a bumbling documentary crew that is following the Bellas around on their tour of the United States. Instead of this supposed farewell, I’d almost prefer to watch their sloppy footage and witty banter on YouTube.
