It’s time to put an end to this nonsense. Ferdinand, sweet Ferdinand, a rare breed of bovine who takes a stand against aggression, competitive rivalry, and conforming to the expectations of others, is exactly what the world is in desperate need of right now.
Although “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is expected to be the biggest grossing film of the year at the box office this weekend, audiences are expected to remain enthralled by “Coco,” Pixar’s tribute to Mexican culture. As a result, one must admire the courage of whoever had the audacity to release this pacifist-leaning animated fable based on a beloved 1936 children’s picture-book about a “toro” whose muscular build belies his compassionate heart. Ferdinand would rather stop and smell the posies than engage in combat with other bulls or dodge a matador’s red cape. He is particularly fond of red posies. “Can I be the champion of not fighting?” he asks his father, who responds affirmatively.

When it comes to promoting its family films, Blue Sky Animation, a division of Fox, is often more of a stealth player than Disney and DreamWorks, which are known for their brash public relations campaigns. Lowering expectations, on the other hand, isn’t always a bad thing. “Ferdinand” is therefore a mostly pleasant surprise in a year that has seen a dearth of outstanding animated films, and it stands in stark contrast to the less savory aspects of “The Boss Baby” and “The LEGO Batman Movie,” among other films. To be sure, there is some padding in the plotting, including a group dance-off and an overly-long chase through a densely populated urban environment as well as an overabundance of chatty critters. Director Carlos Saldanha (a veteran of the “Ice Age” franchise whose “Rio” films were love letters to his native Brazil) and his writing team, however, chose to extol virtues such as respect for others, teamwork, kindness, and following your dreams despite being pressured to do otherwise.

Unlike his corral companions, when we first meet Ferdinand as an infant, he refuses to participate in the macho games and trash talking that they engage in. He’d rather take care of a pretty carnation that has sprouted in their training pen than brag about his potential prowess in the ring in the future. As a result, when his father fails to return after being selected to face a matador, Ferdinand flees and ends up on an organic farm surrounded by fragrant blossoms, where he becomes the pet of Nina, a young girl who lives on the farm with her father. Ferdinand grows to enormous proportions, just as he does in the source material, while maintaining his docile demeanor. However, after having an encounter with a bee, he develops an unusual level of ferocity, and he is sent back to train with his old teammates.

After being given the task of tutoring Ferdinand (infectiously voiced by WWE superstar John Cena), he is assigned a wonky-toothed, googly-eyed goat named Lupe (Kate McKinnon, a stitch in hyper sidekick mode), who is assigned the task of calming the grown-up Ferdinand. While she may be interested in charging at a red cape, her heavyweight contender has no interest in doing so, especially after he discovers that a bull either ends up in the “chop shop”—a terrifying meat factory that is dealt with in a straightforward manner—or is sacrificed for the sake of blood sport in the ring. Several clever sequences take advantage of Ferdinand’s considerable girth and natural grace, including one that capitalizes on the cliché “bull in a china shop” with nifty choreographed slapstick that wouldn’t be out of place in a W.C. Fields comedy from the 1940s. Ferdinand is a lovable and endearing character. The sight gag in which Ferdinand gets a caterpillar stuck in his nose and quickly sneezes it out in the form of an attractive butterfly was particularly charming, despite the fact that it was only a few seconds long. However, even though Paco is confused as to how he and Ferdinand can be brothers, as the bull claims, his wagging tail is an endearing indication that he clearly agrees with the bull. Also present in the film, despite the fact that their presence seems superfluous, there is a trio of vain Lipizzaners in the next field who try to outdo the other animals with their prance moves. When their exhausted leader, Hans (German comic Flula Borg), flops to the ground, I admit to giggling when he declares, “I’ve fallen—and I can’t giddy-up,” which is followed by a slap on the back of the head.

As for the actors who played Ferdinand’s bullring buddies, I admired the decision to cast such a diverse group of actors, including Bobby Cannavale as the brutish Valiente, Anthony Anderson as the skinny Bones, football legend Peyton Manning as the skittish Guapo, and David Tennant of “Doctor Who” fame as Angus, who is originally from the Scottish highlands. But what is truly remarkable about this film is how thoughtfully “Ferdinand” challenges male gender expectations, especially when you consider that the form of the message also features a trio of goofy hedgehogs named Una (Gina Rodriguez), Dos (Daveed Diggs), and Cuatro (Daveed Diggs) as well as a trio of goofy hedgehogs named Una (Gina Rodriguez), Dos (Daveed Digg (Gabriel Iglesias).
