In the previous episode of “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” Madea (Tyler Perry) and her elderly cohorts Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis), Hattie (Patrice Lovely), and Joe (Tyler Perry) battled a group of trifling frat boys and a group of disrespectful high school senior girls who attempted to crash the frat’s Halloween party. Despite the trailer’s promise of comic scares, the film failed to deliver on that promise; instead, it gave us a heads-up by revealing that all of the supernatural occurrences were staged pranks on Madea’s crew. Madea exacted her vengeance by trapping the frat boys in a prison bus with a group of big, burly inmates who were eager to sexually assault the boys. There was also some moralizing thrown in there somewhere, which is standard procedure in Tyler Perry territory.

When I reviewed the previous film, my biggest complaint was that I had sincerely hoped to see Madea compete against real-life monsters and serial killers from horror films. I was disappointed in that regard. After all, broad comedy and horror can result in entertaining films like “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” which was released in 2007. Madea would scold me and tell me I should be “careful what I wish fuhrrr” if she were present at this very moment. Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! has been released as a result of her creator’s blessing. “A Madea Halloween,” which incorporates more overtly frightening elements into the mix. This time, it’s possible that the man chasing Joe down the street with a chainsaw has a genuine desire to butcher him.

Editor’s Picks

However, I’m getting ahead of myself at this point. The first thing I should address is that obnoxious title of yours truly. “Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” is not only cumbersome, but it also feels like a squandered opportunity. As far as I know, Mr. Perry has seen the film “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo,” which contains the best subtitle ever slapped on a movie in the history of cinema. I would have given this film four stars if it had been titled “Boo 2: Electric Boogaloo” before I had even seen it. Perry, on the other hand, has had issues with sequel titles since “Why Did I Get Married, Too?” Even if you believe that grousing about a film’s title is a minor irritation, it can make the difference between success and failure at the box office. Just ask the characters in “The Hudsucker Proxy.”
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Boo 2 A Madea Halloween quiz.

It goes without saying that Madea will not be concerned about poor box office performance. A pre-existing audience of the faithful (and the faith-filled) will fill the seats on opening weekend, ensuring her success. In “Boo 2!” they will sit through the entire 104-minute film without once demanding that Perry provide them with something novel or innovative. And therein lies the problem. Despite the fact that this is her tenth film appearance, Madea exists in a cinematic universe that is filled with numerous scenes of her simply sitting in a room arguing with her people, no matter what the subject matter may be. Granted, those scenes can be amusing, but you’d expect more visual impact from a director who has 45 directorial credits listed on imDB by this point in his career. Without a doubt, nobody is expecting Citizen Kane to appear in this venue. However, would it be detrimental to make the film appear presentable?

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Come to Madea’s house to laugh, forget about your problems, and maybe even pick up a good Christian message along the way. To Perry’s credit, he does a far better job than most of his peers at incorporating that message into the film. To get there, we have to deal with Madea’s niece Tiffany (Diamond White), who, like in “Boo 1,” wants to go to a Halloween frat party, which we have to fight against. Unlike the previous time, she receives approval from her mother, Debrah (Taja V. Simpson). Tiffany is 18 years old and should be trusted more than her father Brian (Tyler Perry) currently allows her to be. Tiffany abuses Brian, and Brian is such a wimp that it is only by the grace of God that Tiffany isn’t in prison for the murder of her boyfriend. Brian is so out of touch that he organizes a petting zoo at Tiffany’s 18th birthday party to celebrate her achievement.

After the events of the first film resulted in a ban on frat house parties, the fraternity decides to hold their bash at Camp Crystal Lake, or whatever Perry refers to as his haunted vista. Because sex-obsessed camp counselors were butchered here, much like in “Friday the 13th,” rumors have spread that the camp may be haunted and that one of the serial killers may still be residing up there. Not surprisingly, it’s an excellent location for a spooky party. Tiffany can’t wait to get up to the dorm and mess around with frat brothers who appear to be at least as old as her father. One of the brothers is supposed to be 20 years old, but he has a thick, full beard that I am unable to grow at my age of 47.

About the quiz

When Madea learns that Tiffany is attempting to defy Brian’s order to skip the party by using Debrah, she and her crew immediately spring into action. Unfortunately for Madea and the rest of the partygoers, something eerie awaits them at the end of the night. As soon as they arrive at the camp, they come face to face with a group of ghouls who have murder on their minds. They include a man in a gas mask wielding a chainsaw, another man wielding an ax, and that hairy little girl from “The Ring,” among others. In contrast to the previous incident, this time the assailants are not fraternity pranksters. They appear to possess supernatural abilities, and the victims who are unable to outrun them leave bloodstains on the ground.

“The Prowler” and other 80’s slasher films served as inspiration for Perry’s murderers’ attire, which I found particularly interesting. Another thing I enjoyed about the slashers was that the final reveal of the killers’ identities made just as little sense as it did in the slashers. “Boo 2!” could have benefited from more effective stalk-and-escape sequences, but instead we are treated to several mildly amusing moments in which Madea and her friends react with fright to whatever happens to them in the film. Because we don’t know how terrifying these creatures are on a psychological level, “Boo 2!” comes across as more Halloween-worthy than its predecessor. Despite this, when Madea finally decides to “kick some ass,” the film fails to convey just how fantastic that could have been.

Perry’s most memorable scene as Madea is also the most amusing scene in any of his films. Madea notices that she has a wanted poster on the wall while she is at the police station to report the creepy goings-on. She immediately calls the police and reports the incident. It has the appearance of the one from “Madea Goes to Jail.” Madea tries to be unobtrusive in order to avoid drawing attention, but she can’t help but be overjoyed at the prospect of having a good reputation. The young picture they used makes her laugh like a schoolgirl, and when Hattie points out that Madea is wanted for check fraud, Madea draws her attention to the long list of other crimes for which she is wanted on the poster. This scene made me laugh out loud before I realized that it was a microcosm of the Tyler Perry universe. These films make a lot of money and are relatively inexpensive and simple to produce. Perry has gotten away with attempted murder, just like Madea did. I can’t say anything negative about his hustle. I hope I’m not in some kind of fool’s paradise, hoping he’ll create some kind of masterpiece to prove us critics wrong about what we’ve been saying all along.
