Despite the fact that “Moana” would have been tremendously entertaining regardless of when it was released, the fact that it was released at this particular point in history gives it an added sense of significance—as well as the ability to inspire.

The latest musical extravaganza from Walt Disney Animation Studios follows the exploits of a young woman who discovers her own voice and forges her own identity through her experiences. As a leader of her people, she chooses to be a pioneering leader on her own terms, rather than the stereotypical princess in need of rescue, which the film acknowledges in an amusingly knowing manner. She possesses both the wisdom to recognize and respect her people’s traditions, as well as the courage to forge her own path into the future.

Moana is on the verge of becoming the first female chief in the long and illustrious history of her Polynesian tribe, shattering the glass ceiling as she does so under a sky filled with breathtaking blue. Consider the implications of that.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Moana quiz.

For its dazzling visuals, catchy tunes, enjoyable performances, clever running gags, and overall sense of levity, “Moana” is certainly worth seeing. With the exception of a few frightening moments, everything is there to please viewers of all ages. However, for some of us in the audience who are older, it’s difficult to shake the feeling of wistful possibility that comes with witnessing a woman ascend to the position of leadership for which she was destined.

It is, however, a must-see for both girls and boys alike. And it features Auli’I Cravalho, a Hawaiian teenager who makes an astonishingly assured and auspicious debut, displaying chops and instincts that are far beyond her years and previous experience. Throughout her performance as the title character, Cravalho exudes grace, impeccable timing, and a contagious sense of excitement. As a result, the film, which was directed by the veteran directing team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin”) with a small army of writers, provides her with plenty of opportunities to shine both individually and as part of a large and diverse cast of characters.

None is more imposing than Dwayne Johnson’s muscular demigod Maui, with whom Moana must collaborate in order to return a magical stone to its resting place and right an ancient wrong that has plagued the Pacific islands ever since—including, most urgently, her own. Johnson, who is considered to be one of the most charismatic people on the planet, charms with all the swagger you’d expect, and he’s also capable of toying with his tough-guy image, as we’ve seen over the course of his career. (A running gag in which Maui’s mass of tattoos comes to life to comment on the action—and mock him—serves as a consistently amusing Greek chorus throughout the film.) Johnson, on the other hand, is underappreciated for his ability to connect with audiences during more intimate and dramatic moments, and “Moana” gives him the opportunity to demonstrate that side of his talent as well.

About the quiz

A variety of emotions are experienced by the two as they set out on their journey across the open ocean, learning to work together to navigate various obstacles and outwit their adversaries. In fact, if you’re thinking of bringing very young children, the giant lava monster might be a little frightening to them, but everything else is pretty darn delightful—including an evil coconut pirate armada that attacks in a hilarious and thrilling sequence straight out of “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton,” collaborated on several of the songs that help propel the action, including Moana’s girl-power anthem, “How Far I’ll Go,” and Maui’s upbeat introductory song, “You’re Welcome.” A part of her longing for freedom and exploration beyond the island’s reef is expressed in the former. This is something her father (Temuera Morrison) and mother (Nicole Scherzinger) have admonished her against because of the dangers that may lie ahead. It may not have the same lasting earworm qualities as the ubiquitous “Let It Go” from “Frozen,” but its message of female empowerment makes it infinitely more worthwhile in the long run. “Shiny,” a zany little number sung by Jemaine Clement as a scheming crab with a penchant for all things glittering and gold, is another standout. It is difficult to ignore the modern-day political figure who is referenced in the song.

The attention to detail in these production numbers is breathtaking; the colors are a kaleidoscope of green and blue hues, and the underwater creatures and settings have an incredibly immersive, tactile feel to their design. When it comes to Moana’s animal companion, a kooky cross-eyed chicken named Heihei (voiced by Alan Tudyk) who accidentally tags along when she dares to set sail on the high seas, the movie may have gone for the easy, physical gag a few times too many, as is the case with the movie’s main character.

Moana, on the other hand, is a strong, curvy girl who is not your typical stick-figure princess, and she is ready to take on any challenge that comes her way. Even a zany sidekick can’t hurt.
