According to all logic, Kate Winslet and Idris Elba should be able to carry a two-hander about strangers who must rescue themselves from a desolate snow-blanketed Utah mountain range after their charter plane crashes should be easily elevated by their combined dramatic weight.
A high-altitude soap opera, “The Mountain Between Us” is woozy with overtly telegraphed peril and determined to make the audience root for a couple who are obviously not meant to be together, and who are played by actors who deserve a generous C-minus in chemistry. Elba, who is widely regarded as “dreamboat material” by his many admirers, mentions in the film’s production notes that this is his first time playing a romantic lead. That he appears so uncomfortable during the film’s private moments could explain why this is so.
That which truly separates Winslet’s globe-trotting photojournalist Alex and Elba’s brain surgeon Ben when fate and bad weather bring them together is not geographical in nature, but rather a matter of script-related conflict. A collaboration between screenwriters Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “Cinderella,” the live-action “Cinderella”) and J. Mills Goodloe (“The Age of Adaline,” “Everything, Everything”), the screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Martin. I’ll vouch for Weitz’s abilities, but in the case of Goodloe, anyone who has adapted a Nicholas Sparks novel that isn’t “The Notebook” is a potential source of controversy. Moreover, having seen “The Best of Me,” I am satisfied with my position.

Certainly, Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, the director of two politically charged Oscar-nominated foreign films (“Paradise Now” and “Omar,” the latter of which is a love story), has established a reputation. His attempt to realize producer Peter Chernin’s self-proclaimed vision of a romantic epic in the tradition of “Dr. Zhivago” and “Out of Africa,” however, is a disappointment. From the beginning of “The Mountain Between Us,” I had a nagging feeling that something was wrong because all flights were canceled at an Idaho airport due to an approaching blizzard. Alex, who is frantically trying to get back to New York in time for her wedding, overhears Ben complaining about having to operate on a young boy the next morning. Alex is furious and confronts Ben. She suggests that they share the cost of a small plane that they can rent. Beau Bridges, their pilot, exudes good ol’ boy vibes as he boards the plane with his soulful-eyed golden Labrador, who is also on board. This is a warning sign that is all-too-conveniently ignored by Walter, who doesn’t bother to file a flight plan.

Walter begins to slur his speech shortly after takeoff, as the plane flies over remote, treacherous terrain covered in white stuff. Ben recognizes that Walter is having a stroke and immediately calls for medical assistance. Thank goodness, I’ve never witnessed anyone suffer from such an attack first hand. However, Bridges appears to have taken inspiration from Ian Holm’s Ash, the malfunctioning android from the film “Alien,” perhaps as a way of making up for the briefness of his role. In these days of “Flight” and “Sully,” the crash itself isn’t nearly as terrifying as it once was. Walter, on the other hand, is dead, though the dog survives and is in better condition than Alex, who has a large gash on her leg. Ben fixes her up as best he can, thanks to the fact that there just happens to be a doctor in the house. Then he goes to tend to his own cuts and bruises.

The medical aspect of the situation is straightforward. Cooperating with someone you have just met is a little more difficult. Once Alex awakens, she reveals herself to be someone who is prone to taking risks and who, when faced with a difficult situation, tends to rely on her instincts. Her thoughts are that they should abandon ship and take their chances on foot because they have no cell phone reception and because all of the devices that could have alerted them to the occasional jet overhead are out of commission. Ben, on the other hand, is more conservative and is less inclined to abandon what is left of the aircraft, preferring to remain in place. During her recovery, the couple goes through a period of getting to know one another. Ben has a wedding ring on his finger, but he never mentions his wife, which is strange. Alexandra, on the other hand, is well aware that she would have “rushed down the aisle like Dustin Hoffman in ‘The Graduate,'” had she made it to her nuptials on time. Ben takes a breath and echoes the sentiments of many a cinephile in the theater by observing that Hoffman was attempting to prevent the wedding from taking place as planned. “Elaine!” he says, meekly, to emphasize his point.

The first few lines of “The Mountain Between Us” are straight-up meet-cute material, but the first few lines of “The Mountain Between Us” sound like a variation on “When Harry Met Sally…” To put it another way, can a man and a woman become friends and collaborate on a common cause? (In this case, the cause is survival.) I appreciated the fact that there didn’t appear to be any lovey-dovey business going on at this point. When Alex looks through her camera lens, she notices a metallic glint in the distance that she immediately recognizes. They set out on their journey with their makeshift emotional therapy dog in tow, and the long, arduous journey forces them to cuddle against the chill of the night sky. In the midst of it all, the film takes a dive from which it is never able to recover.
This movie, like the plane, was doomed from the beginning when Ben ominously declares, “A heart is nothing but a muscle.” It seemed almost inevitable that Alex’s perfectly nice but bland fiancé would turn out to be Dermot Mulroney, not to give anything away about the film’s ending, which is as corny as a crate of Cracker Jack. Such roles, in his opinion, are akin to Morgan Freeman portraying the president or God. Meanwhile, we should not bemoan the loss of our stars. While Winslet’s career has recovered from the arduous “Labor Day,” actor Idris Elba has vowed that he will not be defeated by the lethal “The Dark Tower.” Furthermore, once you realize that “The Mountain Between Us” is on the verge of falling into the so-bad-it’s-good category, it may well be destined for cult status.
