“A Beautiful Planet” is a 49-minute documentary that was shot in part by amateur cameramen, but it is, like previous IMAX-produced shorts, a fine example of blockbuster filmmaking. It is similar to “Gravity” or “Avatar” in that it provides viewers with experiences that can only be seen in large-scale storytelling; however, this one has the budget of a NASA trip to the International Space Station to make this possible. A group of astronauts, who serve as both lead characters and cinematographers, share with us their workday, both inside and outside the office, and their never-ending fascination with the view that they have outside their windows.
The film explores a wide range of themes and takes many different turns as a result of its broad title. It aspires to be a documentary about the formation of the planet, its current state, and its tumultuous future. It also wants to focus on the lives of various astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which serves as a metaphor for Jennifer Lawrence’s narration, which says, “A truly awesome example of what we can achieve when we work together.” The overall package is a little haphazard in terms of editorial organization, but it accomplishes its overall goal: to spread enthusiasm for the Earth and further arouse any interest in preventing its destruction.
The footage that was captured is, without a doubt, spectacular. Wide overhead shots of entire planetary regions take precedence over talking head interviews, as Myers shows us the world at different times of day and night, while we hear the voices of astronauts sharing their observations from below the surface of the planet. At the border with North Korea, the light of South Korea is extinguished. Satellite images taken during the daytime show the Earth’s land formations in their natural state, with Africa’s vastly depleting greens or a dry, carved-out California as examples. A Beautiful Planet concludes with the possibility of life on another planet called Kepler-186f, 490 light-years away from Earth, which is seamlessly mixed with animated explorations into the Milky Way and beyond infinite space.

As a type of NASA public relations stunt, the film is intriguing, as if it were an exercise in delivering the most accessible piece of educational entertainment possible in 49 minutes or less. You can’t help but be awestruck at times, such as when astronauts talk about their daily lives up above (washing their hair, attempting to make espresso, exercising, all of which are fascinating anti-gravity feats) and their observations of the world below. Also audible are hints of the production team’s involvement, such as when the narration refers to global warming as a threat to the lemurs’ habitat (which was already the subject of their 2014 IMAX short, “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar”) or when the narration uses New Orleans as an overtly political example of how the city will be flooded as a result of sea-level rise.

Jennifer Lawrence’s voiceover narration is, in a way, too soothing, but it is effective nonetheless. Despite the fact that her voice is pleasant to the ear as always, her personality is downplayed. Instead of evoking awe in the audience, the emphasis is on gathering information and obtaining a name to include on the poster as part of the process. It reminds me of Leonardo DiCaprio’s similar voiceover work for Myers’ previous “Hubble 3D” IMAX documentary, which sounded as instructional as his exposition moments from Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” in the first half of the film.
