A sugar-induced “Shrek,” “Trolls” is an aggressively auto-tuned animated fun ride for those who are easily distracted by their surroundings. In a 3-D bouncy castle, you’re surrounded by glitter, sparkles, rainbows, unicorns, marshmallows, and cupcakes as Day-Glo woodland creatures, modeled on those smiley naked dolls with feral cotton-candy tresses that were a thing back in the 1960s, attempt to bliss you into submission. It’s a fantasy come true.
To be sure, most children are unlikely to notice that this bejeweled confection is reminiscent of another fairy-tale-skewering franchise built around a sullen green ogre that propelled DreamWorks, which also produced “Trolls,” to prominence as a major player in the animation industry. Not one but two miserable males are rescued by their respective love interests in this scene, while the ladies save the day in another scene.
While the original “Shrek” was mercilessly mocking a certain competitor’s legacy, it did so with a beating heart and an expansive soul, as demonstrated by its use of the melancholy ballad “Hallelujah” in its tale of redemption, which was then considered groundbreaking at the time. “Trolls,” on the other hand, is a derivative madcap money machine whose sole purpose is to ensure that DreamWorks, which has had few hits other than sequels in recent years, has a fresh pipeline of steady revenue to rely on in the future. Nothing more than watching the end credits will reveal how many people were involved in the process of procuring licensing agreements (Target.com alone lists 165 tie-in products).
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Trolls quiz.
In spite of the fact that this visual simulation of mindlessly munching an entire bowl full of Skittles and Starbursts in one sitting is essentially hollow on the inside, children and many adults are unlikely to notice. This is especially true given the rather rote message that the ability to be happy resides within each of us. Given our human limitations, it will be difficult to resist the pre-fabricated pseudo charms of an escapist musical fantasy that devotes the majority of its ingenuity to creating an insanely infectious score. There are plenty of re-imagined staples from every wedding reception held since the ’80s, including songs like “September,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Hello,” “True Colors,” and even the Brady Bunch’s “It’s a Sunshine Day,” which is included in the set.

A large portion of the film’s beat-heavy jams is made all the more catchy by the fact that they are primarily performed to worm-hole perfection by the film’s two melodically-endowed lead voice actors: Anna Kendrick in peak “Pitch Perfect” form and Justin Timberlake, whose self-penned “Can’t Stop the Feeling” just might be the new “Everything is Awesome” in terms of being impossible not to suddenly hum for no reason days after leaving the

But what about the storyline, you might ask? The story goes that, long, long ago, there was a race of tiny, adorably cute trolls who lived their entire lives around singing, dancing, and giving group hugs on the hour, as depicted in scrapbook style with tactile felt cutouts. But their happy lives are frequently interrupted by their bitter, whiny neighbors known as the Bergens. They are a warty tribe of giants with crooked teeth and bad attitudes who live in a town that appears to be decorated in what can only be described as sewage chic, complete with lousy posture and wonky teeth.
About the quiz
They are celebrating Trollstice, a holiday in which they allow themselves to feel happy for one day by indulging in sweet-tasting trolls, which they have gathered together to celebrate. Although cannibalism is being discussed, it has not yet been observed in its true form. In the course of a single year, King Peppy (Jeffrey Tambor) decides to fight back with the war cry “No troll left behind,” and devises a means of allowing his multicolored subjects to flee to safety. Their decomposition has been left undisturbed for two decades—that is, until royal daughter Poppy (Kendrick) throws a wild rave party complete with fireworks. Branche (Timberlake), known as the “Chicken Little of trollhood,” is so depressed that his skin is the color of mud. He warns the trolls that the noise will attract the attention of their enemies. And before you know it, Bergen villain Chef (Christine Baranski, channeling Carol Burnett), has descended upon the hapless children and scooped up a handful of them to feed to King Gristle (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), who has never known true happiness himself.

Off Poppy sets out to save her friends, fending off bizarre beasts along the way, and is soon joined by Branch, who is less than enthusiastic about the mission. As a result of the attraction between the two, they decide to enlist the help of a Bergen scullery maid named Bridget, who has a thing for the king, to divert the king’s attention long enough for them to be able to free the other trolls from their imprisonment. The usual Cinderella-style makeover takes place (swoopy troll hair is involved), but with a Bergen, there is only so much one can do with their appearance.
While playing Bridget, Zooey Deschanel delivers the most enthralling vocal performance and manages to inject much-needed pathos (she bemoans the fact that she smells like gravy) and comic energy into the proceedings as she deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly deftly While it is true that love ultimately triumphs over all, this fact cannot be overlooked when considering that the narrative is so weak that it is not only secondary to the musical numbers, but possibly even tertiary when considering the merchandising push behind this enterprise. Money, as they say, may not be able to purchase happiness. However, for only $22.99, you can get a pink hoodie with troll hair attached for the Poppy in your life, which she will love. Just keep an eye out for hungry Bergens.
