The real science of “Ice Age: Collision Course” takes as much of a beating as Scrat, everyone’s favorite sado-masochistic rodent, does in the film. In fact, the filmmakers behind this fifth installment of the glacial animated franchise, which features a character-clogged and decidedly jumbled cast, felt the need to enlist astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (both as a narrator and in weasel form, complete with his trademark corona of hair, soulful Teddy-bear eyes, and facial fuzz) to explain how our solar system came to be.

A “dumber” reason than is commonly believed exists, and it involves a certain calamity-prone squirrel rat, which we will discuss in more detail below. Having been catapulted into outer space aboard an alien craft by his ever-elusive acorn, Scrat ping-pongs around the galaxy like a bushy-tailed, fang-toothed version of Sandra Bullock in “Gravity.” Consequently, the planets collide with one another like billiard balls, and he leaves a trail of cosmic chaos in his frantic wake as he pursues his prized nut in a Sisyphean effort to find it once more.

Editor’s Picks

For the third time in the “Ice Age” series, the jittery furball mascot of Blue Sky Studios, who eerily recalls such physically dexterous silent stars of yore as Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd as though directed by Tex Avery, continues to be the highlight of these comical return trips to the prehistoric period. He is a steadfast individual who never gives up, never learns, and never achieves his or her objectives. And the animators continue to take perverse pleasure in devising new and inventive ways to torture him, even going so far as to give his acorn a slightly more anthropomorphic presence than is customary.

This time, Scrat also serves as a catalyst for the rest of the story, inadvertently causing a massive flaming asteroid to hurtle towards Earth, with the potential to destroy the entire planet. However, that catastrophe is temporarily put on hold as the members of the series’ so-called Herd make cameo appearances on the show. Manny the woolly mammoth is played once again by Ray Romano, who mumbles his way through the mammalian antics with a dejected expression on his face. His current predicament is as old as time itself, or at the very least as old as the first family sitcom on television: he doesn’t think his soon-to-be son-in-law, Julian (Adam Devine), is good enough for daughter Peaches (Katherine Heigl) (Keke Palmer).

In terms of Sid the sloth, who is voiced by John Leguizamo with his trademark sloppy lisp, he is heartbroken after his Jersey Girl crush Francine (Melissa Rauch) rejects his marriage proposal, which arrives only 14 minutes into their first date. After that, she adds insult to injury by stating, “You don’t look anything like your profile picture-sha.” Meanwhile, Denis Leary and Jennifer Lopez are given the lamest storyline as sabre-tooth tiger Diego and his mate Shira, who are concerned that they may not be able to have children because their intimidating appearance scares children away from them. Really? Isn’t it possible that their offspring would be equally terrifying?

Clearly, the creators of the “Ice Age” series have run out of creative ideas for the main trio of characters. They must maintain the emotionally resonant and heartfelt premise—that you don’t have to be related or even of the same species to be a family—that was a major factor in the previous four films grossing an incredible $2.8 billion worldwide. But “Collision Course” attempts to alleviate sequel fatigue by giving more screen time to side characters from previous chapters and elevating British wit Simon Pegg’s hyperactive one-eyed swashbuckling weasel Buck into a breakout role as he and a trio of nefarious flying dinosaurs escape from the lost world featured in the third “Ice Age” film. “Collision Course” is in theaters now.

About the quiz

Not only does Buck arrive with an ancient, carved column that holds the key to stopping the asteroid, but he also manages to pull a Kate McKinnon in terms of bizarreness. In all likelihood, the impish Ghostbuster is cursing herself for not having thought of toting a pet pumpkin around in a Baby Bjorn or bursting into Figaro’s aria from “The Barber of Seville” in a rousing performance worthy of a pint-sized Pavarotti.

The goofy opossums Crash and Eddie (Seann William Scott and Josh Peck), who giggle when they hear the word “duty,” and Sid’s feisty Granny (Wanda Sykes), who makes such observations as, “That plan is so dumb I wish it had a face so I could smack it!” are among the other amusing distractions.

However, when we arrive in Geotopia, a hippie-dippy domain of perpetual youth maintained by the presence of magic crystals, which are the key to stopping the asteroid, what appears to be an anything-goes philosophy in terms of the narrative takes a turn at the cross section of Incense and Peppermint when we arrive in Geotopia. The Shangri Llama (Jesse Tyler Ferguson—apparently, it is now a law that at least one major cast member from “Modern Family” is required to be a voice in every animated film this summer), the spiritual leader of this tribe of yoga enthusiasts who exhibits the spitting prowess of a major league pitcher while presiding over his tribe, is probably the most bizarre concept.

Make sure you don’t get carried away by the eye-catching purple and lavender hues that have been introduced to the typically chilly color palette! This story is every bit as disjointed as it appears. Scrat as a reluctant astronaut, a pending wedding, a possible apocalyptic disaster, visitors from another prehistoric era, and flower children in the style of the 1960s are all on the menu. As if the writers were simply recycling ideas from previous “Ice Age” scripts that are about as fresh as the wind beneath Sid’s fleas, to quote one of the sloth’s pick-up lines, it appears that they did so with little thought. It’s also a sign that the concept’s extinction date is approaching, but I hope Scrat never gives up on his impossible quest to obtain his acorn, whether in another format or simply in my imagination.
