Fourteen years after the release of “Barbershop,” “In the meantime, Calvin (Ice Cube) and his motley crew of hair-cutters are still working on sprucing up the kitchens of their South Side Chicago clientele. The third installment of the series, titled “The Next Cut,” is set to be released on March 31 “casts the majority of its original members in a timely story about gang violence and the power of a neighborhood coming together to stand up for itself. According to Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), the shop’s raucous provocateur in the first film, a barbershop is a place where people can feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas without fear of being judged. In response to a political measure designed to wall in the neighborhood, writers Kenya Barris (“black-ish”) and Tracy Oliver expand on this idea by transforming Calvin’s into a gang-neutral safe zone.
Jimmy, a former employee, is advocating for this measure, which is being implemented in response to rising statistics of violence (Sean Patrick Thomas). When Jimmy decides to leave his clippers behind, he enters the world of politics, which is a perfect match for his holier-than-thou persona from the first film. Jimmy’s idea, like everything else that comes up in the barbershop, is met with a flurry of debate, both in favor and against it. Somebody eventually suggests that Calvin’s be used as a safe zone for a 48-hour truce between rival neighborhood factions, which is agreed upon. Everyone will be able to get a free haircut during the truce. The main plot of “Barbershop: The Next Cut” begins when barber Jerrod (Lamorne Morris) creates a social media hashtag, which sets the stage for the rest of the film.
This is an ensemble piece in the same vein as its predecessors. The story revolves around Calvin’s son, Jalen (Michael Rainey, Jr.), who is a teenager who is dissatisfied with his parents’ strict guidelines. In the film, he and his friend Kenny (Diallo Thompson) are drawn in by the deceptively alluring lure of joining the local gang, and much of the suspense is built around whether or not the duo will succumb to temptation. Jazsmin Lewis plays the role of Jennifer, Calvin’s wife, who senses Jalen’s potential seduction into violence and believes, like many parents, that he is being led by his friend rather than being followed. There are some well-acted scenes of tension between Calvin and Kenny’s father, Rashad, as a result of this (Common).

While the first sequel took viewers on a journey through the shop’s history, “Barbershop: The Next Cut” takes them on a journey into the shop’s near future. The original all-male client sanctuary has been replaced by a more open and welcoming environment. The female banter of the beauty salon has merged with the macho bluster of the barbershop, and now both parties get to hear the complaints that would have gone unheard if they had been together in the previous situation. This dynamic adds an extra layer of humor and insight to the back-and-forth comedy, allowing director Malcolm D. Lee to play to his strengths in this situational comedy.

It is Lee’s focus on the examination and deconstruction of societal structures of African-American masculinity, even in his less successful efforts, that fascinates me about his work, even in his less successful efforts. For example, in films such as the excellent “The Best Man” and its sequel, “The Best Man Holiday,” “Lee manipulates his characters’ perceptions of themselves in unexpected ways, revealing the internal and external challenges that they are faced with. Some of the time he nods his head in agreement with them, and other times he calls them on their b.s. with a hefty dose of tough love, which is frequently delivered by his female protagonists. In terms of directing, his most impressive skill is his ability to channel these explorations through a combination of comedy and drama. It allows “Barbershop: The Next Cut” to sail smoothly through its few moments of mediocre performance.

The original cast is supplemented by a number of newcomers, the majority of whom are members of the Kenya Barris-Malcolm D. Lee stable of performers. As Calvin’s partner, Angie, Regina Hall is excellent, and she is given a nice serious scene to balance out the comedy that she is expected to perform so well. In his scenes with Eve and, particularly, Ice Cube, Common exudes a calm confidence despite the circumstances. Cube continues to be a great straight man, allowing the comedians to bounce off his stoicism with dignity. He also delivers some of his most emotionally charged performances since his heartbreaking performance in “Boyz N the Hood.”” On the other hand, I wish more had been done with Nicki Minaj’s character in the film. She does a good job in the role, but the script is written in such a one-note manner that she never feels as genuine as the rest of the cast.

Cedric the Entertainer is the creator of “Barbershop: The Next Cut,” as is the case with the entire series. In the film “Barbershop,” Eddie is the quintessential definition of a supporting character, and in the television show “His performance was deserving of an Academy Award. Cedric the Entertainer, who convincingly portrays himself as much older than he actually is, infuses his character with the perfect timing of a comedian and the generosity of someone who wants to pass on life lessons to his younger colleagues. When he says something horrible, there’s a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, but if you look closely, you’ll also notice genuine concern in his eyes when he isn’t joking. Almost every film contains a scene in which Eddie discusses a serious issue, and those scenes are among the most memorable and poignant in the entire series. If you’re looking for one of his best comedic performances, the film’s coda might just be it.
“Barbershop: The Next Cut” never loses sight of the seriousness of its central situation, despite the fact that the film is frequently hilarious to the point of being ridiculous. No matter what race a person is, Calvin’s concern for his son’s well-being is palpable and can be identified with by any concerned parent. Even when violence is present, it is never treated in a light-hearted manner (a confrontation between the leaders of rival gangs inside Calvin’s is as tense and terrifying as any drama you will ever see). The film never loses its grip on the audience, even when it threatens to become downright preachy and a little too on the nose. We all need a good sermon now and then, and like the best sermons, “Barbershop: The Next Cut” delivers its message with just the right amount of humor and wisdom to inspire and linger long after the show is over.
