The film “The Da Vinci Code” riled up audiences before they had even seen it in 2006, including Catholics, albinos, and fans of Dan Brown’s airport novel who were anticipating that Ron Howard’s film version would fall short of their expectations. “Angels & Demons,” the 2009 sequel to “The Da Vinci Code,” sparked outrage simply because it wasn’t as good as the original—despite the fact that it managed to be more entertaining and less self-important than its predecessor.

Even after all these years, whether or not you were a fan of Brown’s particular brand of nonsense, Howard has adapted yet another bestseller from the author’s series: “Inferno.” Due to the fact that it is so ridiculous and disorganized, it is more likely to annoy people than it is to anger them. This time around, Howard and screenwriter David Koepp are all business when it comes to dishing out the doom and gloom, which is of the literary rather than the religious variety this time around. In spite of the high production values and the sincere efforts of an A-list cast, the multiple twists, double crosses, and leaps in logic are more likely to elicit giggles than gasps as the story progresses through its many turns.

Editor’s Picks

Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, the understated hero of the series, in this new installment. Hanks’ performance as Langdon is a prime example of what he does so well: he establishes that Langdon is always the smartest man in the room while still managing to make the character relatable to the average person. By virtue of the fact that Hanks appears to be effortlessly juggling multiple roles, it’s easy to forget what a difficult task this is. It’s become his bread and butter by this point. If only it could be used in the service of better content.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Inferno quiz.

At the beginning of the film, Langdon awakens in an Italian hospital room, completely unaware of his surroundings or how he came to be there. In addition to suffering from excruciating headaches and the disturbing images that flash through his mind: hellish visions of twisted bodies burning and writhing in pain, and surging rivers of blood, he is also suffering from nausea. As soon as he gets out of the hospital, he teams up with the emergency room doctor who has been treating him: the brilliant prodigy Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones).

The fact that he’s in possession of an object that’s critical to solving the mystery of where a global plague is about to be unleashed has drawn the attention of a variety of factions with divergent agendas. A high-tech disease, Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster), a billionaire madman obsessed with Dante, had warned that overpopulation would spell humanity’s demise just before he committed suicide. He believed that killing untold millions with a high-tech disease would be the only way to save the planet for the greater good. To stop the devastation, Langdon is the only person who can help… by deciphering anagrams, of course…

It’s all as insane and convoluted as it appears to be on the surface. The film also features some extremely obvious explanatory dialogue, such as “This map is a trail he left so that someone can find it,” which is delivered by Hanks.

About the quiz

As Langdon and Brooks travel from Florence to Venice and Istanbul, Howard’s pacing is anxious and breathless, punctuated by shrieking sound design and Hans Zimmer’s insistent score, which adds to the tension. They work together to piece together complicated clues at breakneck speed, trade tidbits of Dante’s arcana, and try to stay one step ahead of the bad and/or good guys who are pursuing them. One such assassin dressed as a motorcycle cop with the tenacity of the T-1000, along with some shockingly well-armed agents from the World Health Organization, are among the suspects. As one of the primary pursuers, Omar Sy adds a touch of sophistication and mystery, and Sidse Babett Knudsen, as a WHO executive, creates the rare character in this film who not only feels like a real person, but also like a grown-up in the midst of all the mayhem. While the chemistry between her character and Hanks’ is undeniably strong, the romance between the two actors comes across as rushed and undercooked.

Even though Foster is on screen for a short period of time, his presence serves as more than just a concept, as he spews ominous lines like: “Humanity is the disease.” “The cure is in the inferno.” Jones, on the other hand, is a likable character who serves as a sharp and plucky counterpoint to Hanks’ straightforward Langdon. She is on an equal intellectual footing with him—but she is also required to run a lot in heels.

Irrfan Khan, who plays the coolly calculating leader of a shadowy security agency known as The Provost, is the one who comes close to taking the entire movie by storm in his performance. With his impeccably tailored suits and arsenal of ornate daggers, he may appear to be yet another bad guy—but he may also appear to be a good guy in disguise. Undoubtedly, he is the only person in the room who is aware of how ridiculous “Inferno” is, and he is having a good time with it as a result.
