Doris is a 60-ish, never-wed office drone who spent her sheltered life on Staten Island with a fat, lazy cat, a demanding invalid mother, and decades of hoarded clutter. She even wears vintage clothing that was once donated to the Salvation Army but has since been reclaimed as part of the shabby-chic fashion movement as part of the vintage clothing category. We laugh at her foibles, applaud her small victories, agonize over her questionable choices, share her growth pains, and allow her to pull on our heartstrings because we care about her. In a culture that all too frequently devalues its senior citizens, the arrival of Doris is greeted with the same elation as the first crocus of spring.

Field, who appears to be eternally young, challenges preconceived notions about her at an early age while simultaneously going through the stages of coming of age and midlife crisis. In the beginning of the movie, Doris attends the funeral of her mother, which is a traumatic experience that at first causes her anxiety but eventually paves the way for her to embrace new opportunities. This is made possible by a talk given by a self-help guru (Peter Gallagher makes a cameo appearance in the film and gives cheesy advice like reading “impossible” as “I’m possible”). They show up pretty quickly in the form of John Fremont, her company’s new art director who is roughly half her age and played by Max Greenfield, who, in a welcome departure from his role as Schmidt on the television show “New Girl,” plays a more likable and interesting version of himself. That is all that is necessary to set off her romantic strings and jolt her into a sexual awakening.

Her attempts to entice the unaware John at work are unsuccessful, so she turns to the 13-year-old granddaughter of her outspoken friend Roz (an invaluable performance by Tyne Daly). Roz’s granddaughter assists her in creating a fake Facebook page so that she can virtually stalk him. After discovering that John is a fan of an electro-pop band called Baby Goya and the Nuclear Winters, Doris makes plans to accompany John to a performance of the band at a club in Williamsburg. When Doris tricks John into reinflating the exercise ball she is forced to sit upon at her desk for a quick thrill or when she bounces around like a giddy dervish to her first exposure to electronica music, Field knows how to milk such scenes. For example, when Doris is first exposed to electronica music, she bounces around like a giddy dervish. Some people may consider this story about a wallflower who blossoms to be nothing more than a manipulative and twee fantasy. But for those of us who have faith in Field, we’ll be hooked by the time we say “Hello” to this movie.
