According to the teachings of the Buddhists, the bodhi tree is the tree beneath which one can achieve enlightenment. Although this is not exactly how it works with Bodhi, the surfing bank robber who is the existential hero of “Point Break,” the character of Bodhi is so compelling that a young FBI agent finds himself falling under his spell. Or perhaps it is Southern California as a whole that entices the agent; after all, it is a place where one can go surfing, skydiving, and experience strange karma; all of these things are very alluring to a conventional football hero from Ohio.

Keanu Reeves plays the hero, a former Rose Bowl star with a bum knee who joined the FBI and has been assigned to the Los Angeles field office. The hero’s name is Johnny Utah, which is a rather unthankful name. The frustration level at the bureau has been rising due to a string of bank robberies. They call themselves the Ex-Presidents, and they wear rubber masks of former presidents Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and LBJ. These four criminals have successfully carried out a series of bank heists while leaving no traces behind.

Except one. A man named Pappas, played by Gary Busey, is assigned as Johnny Utah’s partner. Pappas is convinced that the robbers are surfers because one of them has a tan line and a strand of hair discovered at the scene of the crime was contaminated with the same contaminants that can be found at a popular surfing beach. Therefore, he succeeds in persuading Utah to assume the identity of a surfer so that he can investigate the crime.

Undoubtedly, this is a film set in the Golden State. The plot description that I have just provided could just as easily work for “The Naked Gun 3 1/2” as it does for “Point Break,” which takes it deadly seriously, even after adding several other ridiculous developments, such as a character who gets so angry that he jumps out of a plane without a parachute, free-falls until he can tackle a character who has one, and then holds a gun to his head.

Kathryn Bigelow, a stylist who specializes in professionals who do violence, was the one in charge of directing this movie. Keanu Reeves plays a kid who is determined to prove himself, and he is pitted against the twisted intelligence of a megalomaniac in the director’s previous film, “Blue Steel,” which starred Jamie Lee Curtis in the role of an inexperienced police officer.

Patrick Swayze portrays Bodhi, a character who is a part mystic, a part criminal, and an all-around surfer. It would appear, based on the clues that Pappas has uncovered, that he and his gang rob banks to fund their surfing activities, and then they relocate whenever the seasons change. While Johnny Utah is attempting to put together the pieces of the puzzle, he does make friends with them and even falls in love with Bodhi’s ex-girlfriend (who goes by Lori Petty). And then the plot starts to get really clever, all the way down to its zen ending which takes place on a deserted beach in Australia in the middle of a storm.

About the quiz

The movie “Point Break” is not the type of film in which we should devote a significant amount of our attention to deciphering the intentions of the various characters. When Johnny Utah discovers, for instance, that Bodhi is aware that he is an FBI agent, the question arises as to whether or not he should continue skydiving with Bodhi and allow him to pack the parachute. Such inquiries are pointless due to the fact that the film depicts Utah as being under the influence of Bodhi’s spell, in which everything, including free-falling, surfing, and robbing banks, is a component of catching the wave of life and looking for that endless ride.

Bigelow is a fascinating choice to direct this piece of material. She is fascinated by the ways in which the characters in her work put themselves in peril for philosophical reasons. They are men of thought who choose to express their beliefs through action, but they are not men of action in and of themselves. This makes the final confrontation in the film as meaningful as it possibly can be, given the admittedly preposterous nature of the material. It also adds an intriguing element to their characters, which helps make the movie more interesting.

Bigelow and the people working with her are also very talented filmmakers. There is a foot chase through the streets, yards, alleys, and living rooms of Santa Monica; there are two skydiving sequences with virtuoso photography; there is powerful chemistry between the good and evil characters; and there is an ominous, brooding score by Mark Isham that underlines the mood. The basic premise of “Point Blank,” in its condensed form, begs to be made fun of (rookie agent goes undercover as surfer to catch bank robbers). The outcome is impressive in its level of effectiveness.
