I suppose I may be excused for hoping that this novel origin tale of a famous monster builder would be something other than dreadful since I’ve long been a fan of Universal monster movies and other classic horror genres and also since I’m, you know, an old man. You can call me a simpleton. “Victor Frankenstein,” directed by Paul McGuigan (of “Lucky Number Slevin,” which should have given me a hint or two), is all kinds of annoying and pointless despite the brilliant performances of the two young leads Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. It can be said, at the very least, that horror appreciation runs in the Landis family because his father produced “An American Werewolf In London.”

Editor’s Picks

Igor, played by Radcliffe, starts it out by saying that there is a narrative “we all know,” but the one he is going to tell is unique. And I did say Igor. As a much-abused circus hunchback who is also, get this, a self-taught expert in anatomy and biology, Radcliffe’s first nameless character is presented. I’m aware, right? He longs for the circus performer Lorelei (Jessica Brown Findlay), and after she falls, he and medical student Victor Frankenstein (who is actually visiting the circus for spare animal parts) manage to revive her. and so a connection is made. In a scenario that is reminiscent of a Guy Ritchie “Sherlock Holmes” film, but isn’t as excellent (yeah, you read that right), Victor kidnaps the future Igor from his carnival captors and places him in his lab so that he may help him with his ambitious, possibly insane, projects.

The writing of Landis is incredibly astute and loaded with allusions. Although this Frankenstein is Mary Shelley’s, Henry, who is the name of the figure portrayed in James Whale’s “Frankenstein” from 1933, is mentioned in his backstory. A police inspector who is looking for Victor and his new friend gets his own origin story, which puts him in line to take on the role of Lionel Atwill should this film become a series, which we should all hope it doesn’t. Despite the energy put forth and, once more, despite the talent of the young ensemble (McAvoy delivers his pronouncements on “let’s create life” with spittle-projecting fervor), the film is a bloody mess and excessively loud. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Victor Frankenstein quiz.
