One cannot help but recall the well-known James Stewart quote from the 1940 film “The Philadelphia Story” when seeing “Ticket to Paradise.” The privileged class enjoying their privileges is said to be “the loveliest sight in this wonderful, pretty planet.”

To be sure, the wealthy class in Ol Parker’s exasperatingly ordinary rom-com doesn’t just include the main characters: prosperous architects, art dealers, and new graduates of a posh college with deep enough money to afford an extended luxury holiday in Bali. In this particular instance, it also consists of two genuine movie stars, George Clooney and Julia Roberts (you may have heard of them here and there), enjoying the benefits of their well-earned status as the last of a kind Hollywood superstars while sparring through some acrimonious zingers and sarcastic gotchas.

Editor’s Picks

With their elegantly aging faces front and center in front of the rest of us mere mortals, two handsome, eternally captivating silver screen royals coming together against a breathtaking tropical background (and in frothy advertising trailers) is undoubtedly a beautiful sight. Sadly, the tenuous connections between “Ticket to Paradise” and George Cukor’s screwball masterpiece end at that line. And you should put the blame on a depressing script that doesn’t bother with a compelling plot and instead depends too much on its A-list stars’ allure.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Ticket To Paradise quiz.

Let’s go on to a second quotation from a different movie. At this point, picture this ardent fan of romantic comedies raising her hands in the air and shouting, “How do you f**k it up!” in the manner of the late William Hurt in “A History of Violence.” Indeed, how on earth could a rom-com of the caliber we used to regularly see in the 1990s not result from the effortless attractions of Roberts and Clooney? The problem is the second, completely unbelieveable romance story that develops around them. With her hilarious and sexually active female sidekick, Wren (Billie Lourd), and an invitation to join a top-notch legal firm upon her return, Lily (a charming Kaitlyn Dever in an underwritten role), the aforementioned college graduate, is on her way to Bali for a vacation.

After the laziest meet-cute scenario possible, Lily eventually decides to wed the charming seaweed farmer Gede (Maxime Bouttier) with whom she has somehow fast fallen in love. (It would be more accurate to refer to the scene as just a simple meet and disregard the sweet entirely.) Therefore, Lily devotes her entire being to Gede rather than taking advantage of her time with Wren, having a few wild nights out, and going home for the promising future that lies ahead—you know, like any educated young woman of her caliber would do. The kind of love that this critic is blatantly in favor of, especially in cinematic situations, is perfectly acceptable in both real life and in movies. But on a whim, to decide to stay in Bali for the big life decision of marriage? You mean to tell me you got engaged to someone you just met that day? Even the tough ice harvester Kristoff from the animated film “Frozen” chuckled at this notion. And that was a Disney film set in the nineteenth century.

Objectively, Lily doesn’t actually decide to get married that day. But the movie falls so short in developing the affection and chemistry of the couple that it seems like a same-day decision. Instead, co-writers Parker and Daniel Pipski utilize Lily’s plot as justification for bringing Clooney’s David and Roberts’ Georgia together, as well as Lily’s parents and each other’s bitter ex-partners. But when duty beckons, the couple leaves for Bali on a quest to put a stop to this ludicrous affair as a couple of responsible parents.

About the quiz

Fair enough, the David-Georgia passages in “Ticket to Paradise” garner some admiration and provide the two some witty arguments, some of which the movie’s trailer sadly spoils. The momentary bliss we experience in their presence fades away as Lily and Gede frequently reappear and Georgia (played by Lucas Bravo), a present-day romantic interest, takes up too much time. However, the ex-sexual couple’s tension and natural ease at hating each other make it worth the admission price. It would have been one thing if “Ticket to Paradise” had taken the time to really consider the young engaged couples, giving viewers insight into what makes them interesting and the perfect match. You’ll be surprised by how little you discover about either afterward, except from their intense love for the place they frequently deem lovely. Naturally, everything is lovely because much of what we see is an opulent resort, which makes the parents’ painfully amusing statement that “I see why she enjoys being here” in reference to Lily’s decision to stay funny. Anyone who enjoys a nice resort, right?

We are given the opportunity to explore various sights beyond the resort, including the magnificent grounds of Gede’s devoted family and two popular attractions. However, “Ticket to Paradise” seems strangely uninterested in any family relationships or anything related to Bali, with the exception of a few cartoonishly depicted nuptial rites. Everything is background noise and an excuse to bring George and Julia together in the universe of this movie. Wren is the cruelest victim of this temperament. But Billie Lourd still runs with it charmingly, incurring the sin of being more memorable than the bride herself with her P.J. Soles vibes. The movie periodically ignores her, perhaps as retaliation.

Bless the old-school stars Roberts and Clooney for enhancing this drab collection and, in certain cases, even getting you to overlook the absurd movie that surrounds them. However, that scarcely suffices, especially if you’re hoping for a return of the romantic comedies from yesteryear.
