Consider “The Intouchables” as “Pushing Monsieur Philippe,” a French remake of “Driving Miss Daisy,” if that makes it easier to understand. A wise black man from the Paris ghettos enriches the life of a stuffy, wealthy boss by teaching him about funky music and the pleasures of marijuana. This is a tale that has been portrayed in films countless times, but occasionally the performances make up for the formula’s condescension.

In France, the movie was a huge box office success and it is definitely simple to appreciate. A paragliding mishap left millionaire Philippe (Francois Cluzet) paralyzed from the neck down. Driss (Omar Sy), a robbery parolee, applications for Philippe’s caregiver position in order to be rejected and obtain a signature for his claim for unemployment benefits. We realize Philippe needs more than just bodily assistance—he also needs someone to lift his spirits as he conducts tedious job interviews after tedious interviews. Philippe surprises both him and his own household staff by offering Driss the position because of his cheeky irreverence.

Editor’s Picks

Based on Driss’ belief that Philippe will improve if he leaves his stuffy lifestyle and experiences the greater liberties of an immigrant from Africa, the movie chronicles the development of their likeable friendship. There may be some truth to this, but Philippe’s education continues in a series of cliches that are basically demeaning. Driss, you see, has rhythm and soul, and Philippe would be a happy man if he could just absorb some of that. He’ll still be paralyzed, a wealthy Frenchman, and surrounded by bodyguards, but he’ll be happier. How often have we seen the scenario where a stiff square takes a sip from the pot and a smile gradually appears on his face?

The movie “The Intouchables” contains a kernel of truth that it never quite grasps. A competent caregiver does far more than just push, lift, bathe, groom, dress, and provide medication. The patient is faced with a reality that he finds hard to accept: he is no longer in possession of everything he once took for granted, including the basic ability to traverse a room. A caregiver cannot offer that, but he can give companionship, which is more priceless. His teenage daughter is a snotty brat, Philippe’s wife is deceased, and his staff is preoccupied with their wages and standing. Driss is from another planet.

Despite its flaws, the movie’s popularity stems directly from its casting. Francois Cluzet expresses strong emotion solely through his speech and face. Omar Sy is incredibly amiable and positive. He made me think of the African refugee Souleymane Sy Savane portrayed in Ramin Bahrani’s “Goodbye Solo,” a movie that steered clear of the pitfalls that “The Intouchables” commits.

The appeal of a movie like this is that when we start to care about the characters, what makes them happy makes us happy, and this is a perfectly valid appeal. As we move through the events, we often let many presumptions stand. The writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano are ingratiating and cheerfully ready to go for broad humor. But in the end, what we are offered is a rudimentary reduction of racial stereotypes when we gaze through the foreground details.

About the quiz

That was also true of “Driving Miss Daisy,” but it was a period piece with older people who had been influenced by their culture and time, set in the South in the late 1940s. There was some basis for that. The soothing dream of “The Intouchables” is more prevalent. Also, you must try to play this Intouchables quiz.
