This type of violent and sexually explicit film is no longer readily produced in the United States due to puritanical minority standards that are imposed on broadcasting and threatened even for cable. Studios are also reluctant to make films that might have a shaky distribution because of these standards. But a movie’s content is simply what it is about; it does not determine whether it is excellent or bad. Not because of what it shows, but rather because of how deeply it exposes the human spirit, “Oldboy” is a moving movie. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Oldeuboi quiz. Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-Sik), the man, is a wretch when we first encounter him; a drunk who now sits despondently in the police station while obnoxiously donning the angel’s wings he foolishly purchased for his young daughter as a present after missing her birthday. He’s not a bad guy; it’s just that the booze has made him useless. 15 years later, when he finds himself unexpectedly released from his bizarre captivity, he is a different man—focused on retaliation and ludicrously sensitive to generosity. She brings him home, listens to his story, takes care of him, and eventually falls in love with him after sensing his suffering and having an innate sympathy for him.
