This sequel to “A Bad Moms Christmas” has the shoddy appearance and frenetic feel of a hastily put together cash grab, which is exactly what it is: a cash grab.

A mere 15 months have elapsed since the surprise hit “Bad Moms,” which grossed approximately $184 million worldwide, which is an enormous sum for a female-driven comedy in the midst of summer blockbuster season.

As a result, there’s a second “Bad Moms” movie, which hits all of the same beats and themes as the first “Bad Moms” movie, except this time we have double the number of moms because the moms of the moms have shown up to wreak even more mom havoc on the family unit. They’ve also thrown in all the clichés about how this isn’t, in fact, the most wonderful time of the year because it’s Christmas, which is another bonus.

Editor’s Picks

Interestingly enough, this is exactly the same premise as the upcoming sequel “Daddy’s Home,” a film about the fathers of the fathers that no one needed to see again. (There will almost certainly be intergenerational holiday hilarity.) For the time being, however, we must endure the sight of veteran comic actresses attempting to make the most of weak, one-note material that has been provided to them with great difficulty.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this A Bad Moms Christmas quiz.

Every now and then, “A Bad Moms Christmas” manages to strike that elusive, raunchy-sweet balance that made its predecessor such a hit, thanks in large part to the on-screen mother-daughter duo of Susan Sarandon and Kathryn Hahn, who play the titular mothers. Even though returning writer/directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have faithfully recreated the structure and shock value of the original, they have left out the fundamental truths about motherhood that gave the original its depth and meaning.

Amy (Mila Kunis), Kiki (Kristen Bell), and Carla (Hahn) were recognizable in their anxieties about trying to be all things to all people at all times, and their friendship provided a much-needed connection and catharsis for the three ladies at the center of the story. However, “A Bad Moms Christmas” portrays their relationship as well as many of the film’s antics in the most clumsy manner possible: through slo-mo montages of their drunken devastation. In the mall and at the indoor trampoline facility, there are about a half dozen that are set to loud rock or pop music. They are merely filler. After all, if you’ve seen one, you’ve probably seen them all.

Accordingly, each actress is stuck in her character’s own specific lane for nearly the entire film (with the moms’ mothers going to even more wacky extremes) until the story makes an emotional 180-degree turn and decides to be a tearjerker just before the end credits roll. However, the script does not lay the groundwork for us to be moved to tears along with Kunis, who gives it her all and demonstrates surprising range in these scenes.

We’ve known from the start that this Christmas has been a disaster, so we’re not surprised. As seen in a flashback to six days prior to the current time frame, the mothers of Amy, Kiki and Carla have arrived, ostensibly to celebrate the holiday with their respective families. However, they have brought with them emotional baggage as well as gifts for the grandchildren, bringing with them decades of insecurities and resentments.

Amy’s mother, Ruth (Christine Baranski), is a condescending and controlling figure who disapproves of her daughter’s homemade holiday decorations and instead insists on an expensive extravaganza. (Of course, Baranski can pull off this kind of diva routine in her sleep, and she’s one of the few people who can consistently generate genuine laughter.) Sandy (Cheryl Hines, in the least developed role of all) is Kiki’s mother, and she is a needy and clingy woman who wants to be best friends with her daughter and has difficulty understanding the concept of personal space. Added to this is the character of Carla’s mother, Isis (Sarandon), who has been mostly absent and only shows up when she needs money to support her family.

About the quiz

We don’t have to wait long before the pressure of living up to the archaic notion of creating the perfect Christmas, heightened by the stress of having their mothers present, causes our mothers to declare, “Screw it,” once more. As a matter of fact, that’s pretty much what the film is about: escalating mayhem within the genteel confines of suburban life, a concept that has been mined repeatedly—and more shrewdly—in countless other comedies than it has been here. Their commitment to the rebellion appears to be far less enthusiastic than it was previously, as if they are unable to persuade themselves of the importance of their cause.

But, as she was in the first “Bad Moms,” Hahn is the film’s MVP once again, this time for her willingness to go to strange and disturbing places. Hahn, like Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon, achieves this delirious state through a combination of bold gestures and subtle glances, and she’s a delight to watch throughout the film. Especially noticeable are her scenes with Justin Hartley, who plays a hunky Santa with a heart of gold. They meet cute when he walks into the spa where Carla works to get his nether regions waxed before a male stripper competition; they hit it off immediately.

The juxtaposition of the innocent and the inappropriate in their witty exchanges suggests that this “Bad Moms Christmas” could have been a lot more enjoyable from the start!
