Ralphie Parker, his wife Sandy, and their two children, Mark and Julie, reside in Chicago 33 years after the events of A Christmas Story, in December 1973. Ralphie has been taking a year off from work to write his debut book, but several companies have rejected it due to its length. When Mrs. Parker phones to inform Ralphie that “the Old Man,” his father, has passed away, the distraught family travels to Hohman, Indiana, to be with her. She assigns Ralphie two tasks: writing his father’s epitaph and taking over the family’s tradition of celebrating Christmas. In addition to being harassed by two kids on a snowmobile, Ralphie’s kids make friends with one of the Bumpus kids who live next door. Ralphie meets up with Schwartz, who still lives with his mother and has racked up a sizable bill at Flick’s, and Flick, who now runs the old bar his father used to own. Sandy slips as she leaves the home to go ice skating, twisting her ankle. On Christmas Eve, while the kids wait in line to see Santa, the family travels to Higbee’s, where Ralphie miraculously purchases everything Mark and Julie asked for. Ralphie’s car breaks down once more on the way home, and during a spontaneous snowball battle, Ralphie unintentionally hits Julie in the eye, necessitating a trip to the hospital and a temporary eyepatch. When the family is admitted to the hospital, Sandy has little money left to replace the presents after they are all stolen from the car’s opened trunk. When Schwartz returns to Flick’s, Flick promises to cover the bill if he performs a physical stunt called the “Ramp.” Mark breaks his arm while sledding after Schwartz triumphs and his tab is excused, and Ralphie is turned down by his final potential publication. After receiving some consolation from Sandy and reflecting on Christmases past, Ralphie experiences a sudden inspiration surge and creates a piece that is significantly longer than the average obituary. He does, however, leave it on the counter because he needs to get ready for Christmas. By erecting a snowman on top of a tree stump, Mark and Julie are able to avenge themselves against their tormentors and cause their snowmobile to collapse. But that evening, when the star of the tree falls and fractures, Julie gets upset. Frustrated, Ralphie leaves despite the advice of his mother and wife to find a new job. Ralphie breaks into Flick’s pub to “borrow” the star from the tree because all the shops are shut. He is stopped and taken into custody on his way out by Scut Farkus, who is now a Hohman police detective. Scut brings Ralphie home and claims that he owes Ralphie because their altercation helped him find a better route in life. Ralphie is terrified of what Scut will do to him. Ralphie is perplexed by the accolades he gets on his newspaper article on Christmas morning. According to Sandy, who discovered the obituary manuscript, it was soon syndicated because of its high quality after being submitted to the local newspaper. Ralphie gets the chance to pursue his goal of quitting the 9-to-5 and working as a full-time writer when he accepts a new position as a syndicated columnist. As gifts are opened, it is found that the Old Man had recently purchased and personally wrapped very thoughtful presents for the family. The Parker home soon hosts a sizable portion of the community for Christmas dinner. The main family requests Ralphie to read his story about the Old Man after dinner is finished.
