Is “A Dog’s Journey” one of the sweetest or one of the meanest canine films ever made, or somewhere in the middle? While I generally prefer the latter interpretation, the gentle sniffling mixed with occasional awws and chuckles that broke out during my screening suggests that the majority of audiences will understandably lean in the opposite direction, as they did with the film’s 2017 predecessor, “A Dog’s Purpose,” which I also enjoyed. For a shameless family franchise that kills an average of four to five dogs per movie, sometimes in unspeakably wretched fashions (really, where is John Wick when you need him? ), this unconditional affection appears to be a cruel and unusual punishment. Despite this, despite the fact that the series is visually uninspired and ideologically conservative, there appears to be something seductive about it that keeps one (including myself, admittedly) on a tight leash. It turns out that only a select few people are immune to the subtle suggestion that certain dogs and humans are destined to be together for the rest of their lives.

Editor’s Picks

According to Gail Mancuso, the philosophy behind her new television series “A Dog’s Journey,” which follows in the footsteps of its Lasse Hallström-directed predecessor with its assembly line of canine fatalities, is a sound one. (It’s safe to assume that “DoesTheDogDie.com,” the most beloved website of every dog-lover cinephile, is taking a field trip with these films.) Be aware that spelling out the mounting bodies of our four-legged furry friends in these tearjerkers isn’t exactly a crime against the public moral compass. The films, which are based on best-selling novels by W. Bruce Cameron, follow a Buddhist philosophy, imagining a world in which a dog’s spirit reincarnates in the body of a new adorable puppy (who, for some reason, is voiced by Josh Gad even when it’s a female) and pursues its original human for all of eternity.

We are dropped on a tranquil Midwestern farm run by the impossibly wholesome couple Ethan (Dennis Quaid) and his wife Hannah (Jennifer Garner), where the story picks up where “Purpose” had left off (Marg Helgenberger). Ethan and Hannah’s carefree “Boss Dog,” Bailey, a handsome Great Pyrenees Bernese Mountain Dog, runs around the picturesque fields and happily chases his own tail, all the while keeping a watchful eye on their baby granddaughter CJ (adorably played by Abby Ryder and Kathryn Presscott in later years), who is being raised by the couple’s heavy-drinking widowed daughter-in-law Gloria, who is also a caretaker (Betty Gilpin). Bailey leaves the picture quickly enough (poor Boss Dog has a cancerous lump), but he returns in the form of Molly the mischievous Beagle, reuniting with the 11-year-old CJ in order to fulfill a promise he made to his best friend, Ethan, earlier in the film. When CJ moves away from her grandparents to live with the neglectful Gloria, she meets Molly, who provides the kind of comfort and support that every child needs.

About the quiz

Our tenacious canine reappears over and over again as Bailey falls victim to a never-ending loop of reincarnation: once as the African Boerboel Big Dog who lives on the premises of a roadside convenience store (or, as he puts it, “a house made of snacks”), and then as the snippy Terrier Max. During this time, CJ undergoes her own transformation and finds herself on the unforgiving streets of New York City as a budding musician suffering from a severe case of stage fright. Having a string of bad boyfriends—one of whom is a dangerous stalker who was responsible for Molly’s horrifying death—doesn’t help her overcome her insecurities until she comes across Trent (Henry Lau), who she recognizes as her childhood friend Trent. Who can guess which wet-nosed character is in charge of the reunion, complete with paw shake and tail wag?

We assure you that there is plenty of cuteness to go around in “Journey,” complete with dutiful canine humor surrounding pooping, face licking, and the never-ending pursuit of food. However, while the film confronts the sadness and despair associated with certain life crises head-on (an unexpected case of terminal illness is particularly well-conceived in this regard), it strangely fails to treat others with the empathy and seriousness that they deserve. The story, written by Cameron, Maya Forbes, Cathryn Michon, and Wallace Wolodarsky, is blatantly hostile to Gloria, a paper-thin character whose grief and alcoholism are treated in a cruel one-dimensional manner by the other characters. Trent’s ex-girlfriend, who is on the prowl for gold, suffers at the hands of a similar caricaturized vision. Despite this, no one comes to a film like this, in which the world is divided into absolute good and evil, looking for nuance or subtlety in the story. If you can get past the flat visuals and prescriptive pleasantries of “Journey,” you might just be able to get on board with its compelling-enough story of lost souls who are found and lifted up by their ever-faithful canines. On this planet and in the universe beyond.
