“A United Kingdom” is a film about two people who were so in love with each other that they were willing to risk everything to be together — their families, homes, and even their countries — but it plays it far too safe for its own good.

“A United Kingdom,” which is based on the true story of the former king of Botswana and the British woman whose marriage in the late 1940s caused an international uproar, is a film that is overly restrained to the point of being irritating. All of the expected notes are hit by director Amma Asante, who does so in a tastefully artistic manner. David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike are two of the most talented and beautiful actors in the world. And she has an undeniably moving story to share with the world.

Editor’s Picks

“A United Kingdom” is a professionally produced and well-intentioned film. Asante, on the other hand, is burdened with a script by Guy Hibbert that lays everything out for the audience and oversimplifies the characters who are theoretically complex. Seretse Khama, played by David Oyelowo, was exiled from his home country of Bechuanaland, which was then a British protectorate, for long periods of time because he followed his heart. He also enraged and alienated his uncle (Vusi Kunene), who had raised him as his own son, by bringing home a white woman to serve as their people’s queen, a move that earned him the title of “White Queen.”

For her part, Pike’s Ruth Williams became something of an outcast after she married a black man, earning the wrath of her closed-minded father (Nicholas Lyndhurst) in the process. While this was going on, the poor citizens of Bechuanaland were not exactly welcoming of this elegant foreigner with wide open arms. As a result, Ruth was forced to spend her pregnancy alone because the British government wouldn’t allow Khama to return home due to the burgeoning, beastly apartheid in neighboring South Africa. She gave birth to the couple’s first child, a daughter, in a rural hospital, without his presence or knowledge.

It’s all very dramatic, with a wide range of complex and nuanced emotions. According to this illustration, however, Khama and Ruth are exceptional examples of virtue. They did, after all, shed a few tears. In a brief fit of rage, Khama throws a stack of papers off a desk and walks away. However, as individuals, they both have a unique ability to say the most poignant and uplifting thing at precisely the right time. And while Oyelowo and Pike have a good chemistry on screen, especially during the couple’s courtship, it’s never a chemistry that conveys the kind of intense passion that must have motivated these real-life figures to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Their early days together, on the other hand, provide a warm spark at the beginning of the film, and they are among the best scenes in the film. During a dance in 1947 London, Khama and Ruth meet; he’s a thoughtful law student, and she’s an exuberant clerk. They become fast friends. When they discover that they have a common interest in dancing and jazz albums, the section moves at a fast pace, conveying a great sense of the excitement they felt upon meeting each other.

About the quiz

However, duty calls in the form of a letter from Khama’s uncle, who informs him that his studies abroad have prepared him well, and that it is now time for him to return home and lead his people in their times of need. Only he doesn’t want to go it alone, so he brings Ruth along with him as his bride, a personal decision that has far-reaching consequences that neither of them could have predicted at the time. (Asante, in collaboration with cinematographer Sam McCurdy, creates a visually arresting and sumptuous contrast between the foggy chill of England and the sunny expanse of Africa.)

Contrary to popular belief, however, as the stakes rise, “A United Kingdom” becomes less entertaining. The fact that the British government officials who wield their power in order to keep the Khamas apart are depicted in such a one-dimensionally villainous manner is partly to blame for this. One of them is played by Tom Felton, who is also known as Draco Malfoy, and who was given more screen time throughout the “Harry Potter” series.

The conflict between good and evil is so obvious that it’s almost tedious to watch. The mustaches on these gentlemen’s faces are mercifully not twirled, but they do sip sherry as a comical reflection of their condescension and cruel authority.

Oyelowo, on the other hand, can deliver a speech with a potent combination of fire and earnestness, as we saw in his magnificent performance in “Selma.” In this episode, Pike demonstrates once more that she is capable of displaying both vulnerability and fierce feminine strength. We get just enough glimpses of these actors’ abilities in “A United Kingdom” to make us wish we were watching them in a better film.
